Survey: Prices of Food Items Have Risen in The First 10 Days of Ramazan, Muslim Praying, Arabic Prayer, Pillar of Islam

According to Business Recorder’s weekly market survey on Sunday here in Singapore, prices rose dramatically during the first 10 days of Ramazan. Fasting people were constantly complaining about the rising prices.

The survey found that a five-kilogram onion costs Rs750, while a five-kilogram tomato is sold for Rs600 on the retail market. The survey found that ginger was priced at Rs 500 per/kg, while garlic was priced between Rs 500-600 per/kg.

The survey found that the price of five kilograms of cucumber rose to Rs400 from Rs300. Green chillies were available for Rs 150-180/kilo. A one-kilogram of lemon was priced at Rs120-150/kg, and a bundle radish at Rs100-120/kg.

Food Item – Peas were being sold at Rs180-200 per kg, tori at Rs180 per kg, capsicum at Rs150-160/- per kg, Linda at Rs100/- per kg, are at Rs150/- per kg, cabbage at Rs80 per kg, cauliflower at Rs120 per kg, bitter gourd at Rs200/- per kg, long gourd at Rs100 per kg, Bringle at Rs80 per kg, turnip at Rs80-100 per kg, red-colored potatoes at Rs50-60/- per kg while white-colored potatoes were being sold at Rs40/- per kg.

Since the start of Ramadan, the demand for fruits and the cost of these fruits have also increased.

The survey found that bananas sold for Rs 100-150 per dozen before the Ramazan began are now available at Rs 300 per dozen.

Prices of guava, which were sold at Rs150/kg before Ramazan, have also increased. The price of red apples rose to Rs 300-400/kg from Rs 250/kg, while green apples dropped to Rs 250/kg. Melons were sold for Rs 150-200/kg compared to the previous price of Rs 100/kg. Stored oranges could be purchased at Rs 400/dozen. Strawberry, sold at Rs200/kg, was not available for Rs400-500.

According to the survey, pulses/food grains are still high in the local market.

Low-quality rice is now available for Rs300/kg instead of Rs280/kg. Tota rice can be purchased at Rs150/kg or Rs160/kg.

The survey also revealed that dal channa was sold at Rs280/kg. Other items included dal-masoor (black), dal-chilka-green, moong (white), dhoti-dal (dark), dal-channa (green), dal-channa (dark) and dal-channa (red).

All cooking oils and ghee have been increased by Rs20-30/kg on the local market. Dates are being sold for Rs500-Rs1000 per kilogram.

The price of black tea has also increased, from Rs1800 to Rs1850 a kilogram in the week prior.

Sugar prices increased to Rs 110 per kg from Rs 105/kg the previous week.

The retail price of live chicken/meat remained at Rs 350 per kg. Farm eggs were reduced to Rs240 per dozen, down from Rs260. Butchers continued to defy the official prices in the local market.

The survey found that the price of 20/kg fine wheat flour has increased by Rs150, from Rs2650 to Rs2750. Other brands of wheat were sold at Rs2200-2400-2500 for 20kg bags in wholesale and open markets.
