The frequently entertaining and funny tales of his Fariyaq when he departs from his home country of Lebanon and makes trips to Egypt, Malta, Tunis, England and France, provide the author with an opportunity to explore a variety of the intellectual and social issues of his time. These include the corruption and ignorance of Lebanese institutions, both secular and religious, as well as the freedom of the conscience.

Similar to Sterne as well as Rabelais in his humorist viewpoint as well as his technical brilliance, al-Shidyaq wrote the novel “Lip over Leg” an oeuvre that is unique and not classifiable. The novel was initially ridiculed by critics for its sharp criticism of authority and religion-based suspicions and also for the book’s “obscenity,” and later versions were generally diminished. The current version is the very first English version of the text, and it also reproduces the original Arabic text, which was first published under the instructions by the author in 1855.
