The Expeditions is among the oldest biographies about the Prophet Muhammad to survive to the present day. The primary writer, Ma’mar ibn (96-153/714-770) was a well-known academic from Basra in the southern part of Iraq who was admired for his expertise in prophetic tradition, Islamic law, and the interpretation of the Qur`an.

The fascinating seminal work of the foundational period includes stories passed down by Ma’mar’s most famous student, ‘Abd al Razzaq of Sanaa telling of Muhammad’s childhood and prophetic journey as well as the tribulations and trials of his early followers in their battle against their homeland in the Near East. The translation, which converts the original text into usable contemporary English in the very first instance it is accompanied by many annotations that provide the religious, cultural and historical contexts for the people and events mentioned in the pages.

The Expeditions is a significant evidence of the beginning Muslims memories of the life of Muhammad and his companions and is an essential text to understand the history of the Prophet as well as the development of the Islamic empire
