About the Author

Freeman was born in San Diego, USA, Since 1908. In his early years, he was given the trumpet as a gift from the father of his. He was a fervent student and joined the California dance group. After graduation from high school he travelled towards New York City to study art under the guidance from Joan Sloan and Harry Wickey at the Art Students League. He made enough money through his studies through playing the trumpet in evenings in nightclubs and weddings.

As time went on, he became comfortable creating a career out of sketching impressions of Broadway shows for The New York Times and The Herald Tribune. This transition was made easier by a large part by a very tragic incident in which the trumpet he was playing went missing.

 In one night when he was so caught up in drawing people in the subway that his mind was blown by the fact that it was there on the bench beside him. The new job proved to be an ideal suit for Don however, because Don had always enjoyed the theatre.

He was first introduced to the literature of children’s books when William Saroyan contacted him to illustrate a number of books. Then, he started to create and illustrate his own works which that he enjoyed easily and with joy. 

Through his writing it was possible to create his own stage: “I love the flow of turning the pages, the suspense of what’s next. Ideas just come at me and after me. It’s all so natural. I work all the time, long into the night. I don’t know when the time ends. I’ve never been happier in my life!”

Don passed away in 1978 after a long and lucrative career. He was the creator of many beloved characters during his time and perhaps the most adored among them was a stuffed overall-wearing bear called Corduroy.

Don Freeman was the author and illustrator of numerous well-known books for children among them Corduroy, A Pocket for Corduroy, and the Caldecott Honor Book Fly High Fly Low.
