In This Blog we will learn about Arabic Harakat .Arabic has three vowels that are referred to as Arabic Harakat. These may be short and long. Three long vowels are regarded as letters in full right and there are represented in the alphabet:

ا = ā
و = ū
ي = ī

Their respective short vowels, called the diacritic signs, are characters either written above or beneath a specific consonant. There are main Three Arabic Harakat:

Fat’ha ـــَــ

It is a short vowel sound for “a”. It is denoted by a short diagonal line above the consonant that it pronounces as in بَ pronounced [ba].

Damma ـــُــ

It is a short vowel sound for “u”. It is signified by a small looped mark, such as a small waw (و), above the preceding vowel, in the sounding, as in بُpronounced [bu] or [bo].

Kassra ـــِــ

It is a short vowel sound for “i”. It is denoted by a brief diagonal mark at the bottom of the consonant that it precedes in pronunciation, such as in بِpronounced [bi].

What are Diacritics in Arabic?

Generally, the diacritics represent any signs affixed to letters or their edges in order to represent the pronunciation not only in Arabic but also in other languages. In Arabic, there are harakat and Tashkeel.
