Dua in Taraweeh Prayer Transliteration, Translation

Dua in taraweeh prayer is something many Muslims ask about each Ramadan, usually when the imam pauses after four rak’ahs and the whole congregation starts reciting together. It is a quiet, familiar moment, but few people know where the words come from. This guide explains the practice clearly and honestly.

Why Taraweeh Matters

Tarawih is the special night prayer of Ramadan, prayed in congregation after Isha. Britannica’s overview of Ramadan explains how the month centers on fasting, prayer, and the Qur’an.

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged standing in prayer during Ramadan, and he promised forgiveness for those who do it sincerely.

Dua in taraweeh prayer

Between each set of four rak’ahs, many Muslims recite this customary dhikr. It is a common practice, especially among Hanafis, and is not a specific hadith. It is a taraweeh dua in English meaning, a praise of Allah ending with a request for safety from the Fire.

Transliteration: Subhana dhil-mulki wal-malakut. Subhana dhil-‘izzati wal-‘azamati wal-haybati wal-qudrati wal-kibriya’i wal-jabarut. Subhanal-malikil-hayyil-ladhi la yanamu wa la yamut. Subbuhun quddusun Rabbuna wa Rabbul-mala’ikati war-ruh. Allahumma ajirna minan-nar.

English Translation: Glory be to the Owner of dominion and sovereignty. Glory be to the Owner of honor, greatness, awe, power, pride, and majesty. Glory be to the King, the Ever-Living, who neither sleeps nor dies. Most Glorious, Most Holy, our Lord and Lord of the angels and the Spirit. O Allah, save us from the Fire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Must I recite it?

No. It is not required. You may recite it, say your own dua, or sit quietly in remembrance during the pause.

How many rak’ahs should I pray?

Many pray twenty, while others pray eleven. Follow your imam and your school, and do not criticize someone who prays differently.

Can I pray Taraweeh at home?

Yes. Prayer at home is valid, though praying in congregation gives extra reward and helps you finish the Qur’an with the community.

Can women pray Taraweeh?

Yes. Women may pray Taraweeh at home or at the mosque where it is available, with proper hijab and manners.

Conclusion

Taraweeh is about showing up, night after night, with faith and sincerity. The exact words you say in the pause matter less than the heart you bring. Learn the customary dhikr if you like, ask Allah sincerely, and keep the habit through the whole month. Start this Ramadan with intention, and let every night count.
