Step-by-Step Guide to Salatul Istikhara

1. Perform Wudu and Pray Two Rak’ahs
Begin with wudu, then pray two rak’ahs of nafl salah with the intention of istikhara in your heart.

2. Recite the Istikhara Dua
After completing the salah, recite the istikhara dua sincerely, keeping your specific matter in mind.

3. Mention Your Need
The Prophet ﷺ taught that after the general dua, the person should name their specific need. If you don’t know Arabic, thinking of the matter while reciting is enough — you can also state it in your own language, just as with any other dua.

4. Make a Decision and Act on It

If you feel content and circumstances naturally move in that direction, proceed with confidence.
If you feel unsettled and things keep going against the flow, it may be time to reconsider.
If you’re still unsure, repeat the dua as often as needed — avoiding only sunrise, solar noon, and sunset, the times prayer is discouraged.

Many scholars advise not relying on the feeling of the heart alone, since it isn’t always a clear, tangible signal. It also helps to pay attention to practical roadblocks: if a path keeps getting harder despite genuine effort, that itself can be a sign; if it keeps opening up with ease, that too is worth noticing.

Make Istikhara Dua (As Per Sunnah)

Arabic:
اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ، وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ، وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ، اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هٰذَا الْأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي، فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي، ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هٰذَا الْأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي، فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ، وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ، ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِي بِهِ

Transliteration:
“Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi’ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika, wa as’aluka min fadlika al-‘azim, fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru, wa ta’lamu wa la a’lam, wa anta ‘allamu al-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna hadha al-amra khayrun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li, thumma barik li fih. Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hadha al-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu, waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kana, thumma ardini bih.”

English Translation:
“O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense grace. You have power and I have none, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of unseen things. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is bad for me, then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”

How NOT to Do Istikhara

Don’t ask someone else to do istikhara for you. The wording centers on “I” — istikhara is a personal conversation between you and Allah. Allah is equally near to every believer who calls on Him.
Don’t wait for a dream as the only sign. Dreams aren’t required, and unless you’re genuinely qualified to interpret them, it’s easy to misread them.
Don’t perform istikhara for obligatory or forbidden matters. Istikhara applies to permissible matters where a real choice exists — not to things already commanded or already prohibited.
Don’t add rituals not mentioned in the Sunnah. There’s no special surah, no fixed number of days, and no requirement to stay silent afterward.
