2	وَأَنتَ حِلٌّ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ (2)	AND YOU, [O MUHAMMAD], ARE FREE OF RESTRICTION IN THIS CITY –	Wa anta ḥillun bihādhā l-balad(i)
3	وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ (3)	AND [BY] THE FATHER AND THAT WHICH WAS BORN [OF HIM],	Wa wālidin wamā walad(a)
4	لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ (4)	WE HAVE CERTAINLY CREATED MAN INTO HARDSHIP.	Laqad khalaqnā l-insāna fī kabad(in)
5	أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ (5)	DOES HE THINK THAT NEVER WILL ANYONE OVERPOWER HIM?	Ayaḥsabu allan yaq’dira ʿalayhi aḥad(un)
6	يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا (6)	HE SAYS, “I HAVE SPENT WEALTH IN ABUNDANCE.”	Yaqūlu ahlaktu mālan lubadā(ā)
7	أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ (7)	DOES HE THINK THAT NO ONE HAS SEEN HIM?	Ayaḥsabu allan yarahu aḥad(un)
8	أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُ عَيْنَيْنِ (8)	HAVE WE NOT MADE FOR HIM TWO EYES?	Alam najʿal lahu ʿaynayn(i)
9	وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ (9)	AND A TONGUE AND TWO LIPS?	Walisānan washafatayni
10	وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ (10)	AND HAVE SHOWN HIM THE TWO WAYS?	Wahadaynāhu l-najdayn(i)
11	فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ (11)	BUT HE HAS NOT BROKEN THROUGH THE DIFFICULT PASS.	Falā iq’taḥama l-ʿaqabah
12	وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ (12)	AND WHAT CAN MAKE YOU KNOW WHAT IS [BREAKING THROUGH] THE DIFFICULT PASS?	Wamā adrāka mā l-ʿaqabah
13	فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ (13)	IT IS THE FREEING OF A SLAVE	Fakku raqabah
14	أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ (14)	OR FEEDING ON A DAY OF SEVERE HUNGER	Aw iṭ’ʿāmun fī yawmin dhī masghabah
15	يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ (15)	AN ORPHAN OF NEAR RELATION	Yatīman dhā maqrabah
16	أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ (16)	OR A POOR PERSON IN MISERY	Aw miskīnan dhā matrabah
17	ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ (17)	AND THEN BE AMONG THOSE WHO BELIEVED AND ADVISED ONE ANOTHER TO PATIENCE AND ADVISED ONE ANOTHER TO COMPASSION.	Thumma kāna mina alladhīna āmanū watawāṣaw bil-ṣabri watawāṣaw bil-marḥamah
18	أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ (18)	THOSE ARE THE COMPANIONS OF THE RIGHT.	Ūlāʾika aṣḥābu l-maymanah
19	وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ (19)	BUT THEY WHO DISBELIEVED IN OUR SIGNS – THOSE ARE THE COMPANIONS OF THE LEFT.	Wa-alladhīna kafarū bi-āyātinā hum aṣḥābu l-mashʾamah
20	عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ (20)	OVER THEM WILL BE FIRE CLOSED IN.	ʿAlayhim nārun muʾṣadah
