How To Pray Taraweeh At Home?

We will learn in this blog how to pray Taraweeh at home. When praying Tarawih at home, start with the Isha prayer. Next, recite verses from the Quran that you are familiar with or read from a mushaf in sets of two rakats (units) interspersed with brief breaks. Finally, conclude with the Witr prayer, emphasizing sincerity and introspection. Standing (Qiyam), bowing (Ruku), prostrating (Sujud), and concluding with Taslim (peace) following each pair of rakats comprise the fundamental prayer.

Preparation & Intention

  1. Clean Space & make Wudu: Find a clean, quiet spot and ensure you have performed Wudu.
  2. Intention (Niyyah): Make a sincere intention to pray Taraweeh for Allah.

Performing the Prayer (Per Two Rakats)

  1. Start: Say “Allahu Akbar” (God is the Greatest) and raise hands to shoulders/ears, then place the right hand over the left.
  2. Recite: Quietly say the opening supplication, then recite Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by another short Surah.
  3. Ruku (Bowing): Say “Allahu Akbar,” bow with hands on knees, back straight. Recite praises (e.g., Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem).
  4. Stand: Rise saying Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him).
  5. Sujud (Prostration): Say “Allahu Akbar,” and prostrate with forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes touching the ground. Recite praises (e.g., Subhana Rabbiyal A’la).
  6. Sit & Repeat Sujud: Say “Allahu Akbar,” sit briefly, then prostrate again.
  7. Stand for the Next Rakat: Say “Allahu Akbar” and stand to begin the second rakat, repeating steps 2-6.
  8. Tashahhud (Sitting): After the second sujud of the second rakat, remain seated for Tashahhud.
  9. Taslim (End): Turn your head right and left, saying Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah, ending the two rakats.

  • Quran: You can read from a physical Quran (mushaf) or smartphone if needed, says Islamic Relief UK.
