When a loved one dies, many of us freeze. A dua for someone who died is the first gift we can give, yet most people only half remember the words. Grief makes the mind blank. That is normal, and a little preparation helps.
If you want a practical companion for these moments, a book such as an Islamic funeral and janazah guide is worth keeping at home.
First Words on Hearing The Death News
Before anything else, say what Allah taught us.
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn
“Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.”
Say it calmly, even if tears are falling. Crying is natural. The Prophet ﷺ himself wept when his son Ibrahim passed away.
Dua for someone who died
This is the best-known supplication, taught by the Prophet ﷺ. You can recite it in the janazah prayer, at the graveyard, or at home.
Transliteration:
Allāhummaghfir lahu warḥamhu, wa ʿāfihi waʿfu ʿanhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassiʿ mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-māʾi wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihi minal-khaṭāyā kamā yunaqqath-thawbul-abyaḍu minad-danas.
English Translation
“O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, give him well-being and pardon him. Honor his place of rest and widen his entrance. Wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt.”
A Second Dua for the Deceased
This one was taught for a person who has just passed away, as reported from Umm Salamah.
Allāhummaghfir li-fulān (say the name), warfaʿ darajatahu fil-mahdiyyīn, wakhlufhu fī ʿaqibihi fil-ghābirīn, waghfir lanā wa lahu yā Rabbal-ʿālamīn, wafsaḥ lahu fī qabrihi wa nawwir lahu fīh.
Meaning: “O Allah, forgive [name], raise his rank among the guided, look after those he left behind, forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds, and make his grave wide and full of light.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my dua really reach the deceased?
Yes. The Qur’an and Sunnah teach that the dua of the living benefits the dead, along with charity given sincerely on their behalf.
Is it wrong to cry at a funeral?
No. Tears are mercy. What Islam discourages is wailing, tearing clothes or complaining against Allah’s decree.
Can I use my own words in dua?
Absolutely. The authentic supplications are best, but speaking from your heart in your own language is always welcome.
Conclusion
Death is the one journey none of us can avoid, yet love does not stop at the grave. A few sincere words, a small sadaqah, a quiet prayer at night: these keep the bond alive and may light the road for the one who left.
