A Quick Guide To Quran Tajweed Rules. Tajweed is a known term among those who are already reciting the Quraan. The raw meaning of the word is ‘to perfect, to adorn, or to embellish’. In Islam, it is a set of rules to enable the readers in reciting the holy Quran in the pronunciation of same way Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was taught by Angel Jibreel.
Importance of Tajweed
It not only makes the recitation beautiful, but Tajweed also assures that the message will not be garbled due to inadvertent error. Reciting without Tajweed may alter the meaning of words because there are different rules that are established that distinguish similar letters. Even false elongations might make a difference to meaning
Rules of Tajweed
Tajweed should be initially acquired by listening and rehearsing to tune in with the flawless recitation. The following rules are merely explanatory, and one should seek help. This paper will only give an overview of some of the more significant rules in broad terms. This can be used as a guide in learning the rules
12 types of Quran tajweed rules:
- Al-Isti’aathah & Al-Basmalah
- Noon Saakin and Tanween
- Meem Sakinah
- Al-Madd
- Qalqalah
- Tarqeeq and Tafkheem
- Noon and Meem Mushaddad
- Muldood
- Waqf and Ibtida
- Ghunnah
- Sifaat-al-Huroof
- Makharij-al-Huroof
some definitions that will be used the explanations:
Ghunnah: It is sound that goes through your nose when you say some letters. Stick your nose so that it is not possible to breathe through it. And what have you got that begins with /m/ or /n/? You will vibrate your nose by holding that letter. It is like saying Mmmm when you see some good food!
Sakinah/Sakin:
As an example, noon sakinah is noon with sukoon نْ
Noon Sakinah & Tanween
This tajweed rule is to do with the issue of the vowell/stems and letters that make the ‘nnn‘ sound like for example:
- noon sakinah نْ
- letters with tanween
- بًا (ban)
- بٍ (bin)
- بٌ (boon)
Idhaar
When the sound of a noon sakinah ن or a tanween is indicated by these 6 Arabie letters [ ] then saythe noon as usual.
Iqlaab
If there is a [ب] followed after a noon sakinah or Noon tanween, then turn into the ghunnah [م] by pronouncing the meem, but still pronouncing the [ب] afterward.
Ikhfaa
The rest of the letters not contained in it are governed by Ikhfaa [ ت ث ج د ذ س ش ص ض ط ظ ف ق ك ].
Noon & Meem Mushaddad
In case a noon or a meem carries shaddah you should say a 2 beat ghunnah.
- ثُمَّ = thummma
- إِنَّ = innna
Meem Sakinah
In this Tajweed rule, the same sub-rulings exist within noon sakinah and tanween, but not as many specific letter applications do.
Ikhfaa Shafawy
If a Baa comes after a Meem Sakeeh then we put a ghunnah while concealing of the Meem Sakeeh then we proceed to the Baa
Idghaam Shafawy
In a case where the beginning of the word is composed of a meem and is followed by a meem sakinah, then join the words on the meem and note ghunnah.
Izhaar Shafawy
And the rest of the letters follow a meem sakinah and this sub-rule is applicable therein to those. The meem can go like this, with no ghunnah or fusion of sound with the following letter.
أَلَمْ تَرَ = Alam tara
Qalqalah
This Tajweed convention refers to sounding and the practice is to make an echoing sound at the end of the pronunciation of some of the letters.
The Qalqalah letters are as follows:
Al-Madd
Madd involves letters that the reciter must lengthen more than it is usually the case. The elongation varies as per the situation and the symbol used.
Final Words
To study the rules of Tajweed is not a skill only, but a profound acquaintance with Quran.
