Let’s begin with the Arabic alphabet. This is the foundation for all the lessons. These are the basic characters of the Arabic writing system.

Alphabet Reading – Arabic has 28 letters. Arabic is written from left to right. Short vowels in Arabic are not usually written. Arabic letters are shaped according to the position they are in a word.

Let’s take a closer look at these points.

Arabic has 28 letters.

Alphabet Reading – This means that only two letters are added to the Arabic alphabet (26 letters) The Arabic alphabet is pronounced the same as English. The letter “c”, in English, is sometimes pronounced as an “s” ( ceasear), and sometimes as a “k” ( cucumber). Another example is “gh”, which can be pronounced “f” in enough, and “g” in ghost. Arabic letters retain their original sound.

Arabic is written from left to right.

English is written as follows:

Arabic is, however, written from left to right:

This can be difficult to get used to but it is possible with enough practice.

Short vowels in Arabic are not usually written.

In Arabic, there are three short vowels: an “u” short for “look”, an “a” short for “can” and a “i” short for “with”. These short vowels are often omitted from writing. Written long vowels (such the “ee” from “tree”) are not allowed. A sentence like:

“The book in the tree looks very ugly and is rotten.”

It is

“Th bk’n th trees’s the vr’gl’nd rttn.”

Alphabet Reading – It can be difficult at first to identify the short vowels missing. You will learn more about Arabic grammar and be able “guess” which short vowels are missing.

Arabic letters are shaped according to the position they are in a word.

The Arabic script is a cursive script that looks a lot like handwritten English. I.e. The letters in a word are almost always connected. This requires certain changes to their shapes. You will make some changes to letters if you write English words cursively. If the preceding letter is e.g., then the letter “s”, will be connected to it with a diagonal stroke. An “n”

These changes can be very drastic in Arabic. The following table summarizes the Arabic alphabet letters and their shapes, according to whether or not they are:
1) On their own (isolated).
2) at the beginning of a word
(3) in the middle of a Word
Or
4) at end of word.

* The six letters with an asterisk (*), cannot be linked to the left.

To feel for the letters, you should write them a few times each.

Pronouncing Arabic sounds

After you have had a quick glance at the Arabic alphabet you are now ready to learn how to pronounce the letters. You can hear the Arabic letters being spoken by the Arabic letter application.

Let’s make it simple by dividing the letters into three groups according to their difficulty.

Simple

This group includes all letters that can be pronounced more or less as well as their English counterparts.

Medium

These letters sound somewhat like English sounds but are more difficult to pronounce.

Difficult

For beginners, these Arabic letters may be difficult to pronounce. You can persevere and listen to recordings by native speakers. You’ll eventually hurt your throat and get it right.
