Through the course of eleven months of exhausting traveling, Ibn Fadlan records the incredible sights he observes during his journey, including the aurora borealis, and the dark night skies in the North. In addition, he provides an account about the Viking Rus and their dress codes, customs as well as body painting and an impressive story of a ship’s funeral. Together, these tales reveal the world of different cultures during the glory days of the Abbasid Empire, and are told with as much interest and enthusiasm as the stories were perceived by the beholders who were observant.

Ahmad ibn Fadlanwas one of the members of a diplomatic team that was sent by Abbasid caliph al Muqtadir in 309-310/921-922 to the King of the Volga Bulghars. This is the sole evidence of that mission.

Tim Severinis a British filmmaker, explorer, and lecturer. He won the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award for his non-fiction novel The Sindbad Voyage and is famous by the Viking Historical Fiction book series (2005).
