SURAH AN-NAJM (Chapter 53)

Verse	Arabic	Transliteration	English Translation
1	والنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ	Wa-n-najmi idha hawa	By the star when it falls
2	مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ	Ma dolla sahibukum wa ma ghawa	Your companion (Muhammad) has not gone astray, nor has he erred
3	وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ	Wa ma yantiq an al-hawa	Nor does he speak from desire
4	إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ	In huwa illa wahy yuha	It is not but a revelation revealed
5	عَلَّمَهُ شَدِيدُ الْقُوَىٰ	Allamahu shadid al-quwwa	Taught to him by one mighty in power
6	ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَىٰ	Dhu miratin fa-istawa	Of great strength; and he stood poised
7	وَهُوَ بِالْأُفُقِ الْأَعْلَىٰ	Wa huwa bi-l-ufuq al-a’la	While he was in the highest part of the horizon
8	ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ	Thumma dana fa-tadalla	Then he drew near and descended
9	فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ	Fa-kana qab qawsain aw adna	And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer
10	فَأَوْحَىٰ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ مَا أَوْحَىٰ	Fa-awha ila abdihi ma awha	And He revealed to His servant what He revealed
11	مَا كَذَبَ الْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰ	Ma kazzab al-fuad ma raa	The heart did not lie [about] what it saw
12	أَفَتُمَارُونَهُ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ	Afa-tumarunahu ala ma yara	So will you dispute with him over what he saw
13	وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ	Wa-laqad raahu nazlatan ukhra	And he certainly saw him another time
14	عِندَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنتَهَىٰ	Inda sidrat al-muntaha	At Sidrat al-Muntaha (the Lote Tree of the Furthest Boundary)
15	عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ الْمَأْوَىٰ	Indaha jannat al-mawa	Near it is the Garden of Refuge
16	إِذْ يَغْشَى السِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ	Idh yaghsha as-sidra ma yaghsha	When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered it
17	مَا زَاغَ الْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ	Ma zagh al-basr wa ma tagha	The sight did not swerve, nor did it exceed its limit
18	لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِ الْكُبْرَىٰ	Laqad raa min ayat rabbihi al-kubra	He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord
19	أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزَّىٰ	Afaraitum al-lat wa al-uzza	Have you seen Al-Lat and Al-‘Uzza
20	وَمَنَاةَ الثَّالِثَةَ الْأُخْرَىٰ	Wa-manata al-thaliata al-ukhra	And Manat, the third – the other one
21	أَلَكُمُ الذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ الْأُنثَىٰ	Alakum al-zakar wa lahu al-untha	Is the male for you and for Him the female
22	تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰ	Tilka idzan qismah diza	That indeed is an unjust division
23	إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا أَسْمَاءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا أَنتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُم	In hiya illa asma sammaitumuhum antum wa abaakum	These are not but names which you have named – you and your fathers
24	مَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَانٍ	Ma anzal allahu biha min sultan	Allah has sent down no authority for them
25	إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَإِن الظَّنُّ لَا يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئًا	In yattabi’un illa az-zan wa inn az-zann la yughni min al-haq shayan	They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all
26	فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا	Fa-a’rid an man tawalla an dhikrina wa lam yurid illa al-hayah ad-dunya	So turn away from whoever turns away from Our message and desires not except the worldly life
27	ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ الْعِلْمِ	Dhalik mablaghuhum min al-ilm	That is their sum of knowledge
28	إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اهْتَدَىٰ	Inna rabbaka huwa a’lam biman dalla an sabilihi wa huwa a’lam biman ihtada	Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided
29	فَلِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ	Fa-lillah ma fi as-samawat wa ma fi al-ard	So to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth
30	لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا بِمَا عَمِلُوا وَيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا بِالْحُسْنَىٰ	Liyajzi allazin asau bima amilu wa yajzi allazin ahsanu bil-husna	That He may reward those who do wrong with the recompense of what they have done and reward those who do good with the best reward
31	الَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَائِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ إِلَّا اللَّمَمَ	Allazin yajtanibun kabaira al-ithm wa al-fawahish illa al-lam	Those who avoid the greatest of sins and immoralities, except for small faults
32	إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَاسِعُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ	Inna rabbaka wasi al-maghfira	Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness
33	هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ	Huwa a’lam bikum idh ansha akum min al-ard wa idh antum ajinnah fi butun ummahatikum	He is most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers
34	فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنفُسَكُمْ	Fa-la tuzakku anfusakum	So do not commend yourselves
35	هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ	Huwa a’lam biman ittaqaa	He is most knowing of who fears Him
36	أَفَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي تَوَلَّىٰ	Afaraita allazi tawalla	Have you seen the one who turned away
37	وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰ	Wa a’ta qalilan wa akda	And gave a little and [then] withheld
38	أَعِندَهُ عِلْمُ الْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰ	A indahu ilm al-ghayb fa huwa yara	Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees
39	أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِي صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ	Am lam yunabaa bima fi suhuf musa	Or has he not been informed of what is in the scriptures of Moses
40	وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ الَّذِي وَفَّىٰ	Wa-ibrahima allazi waffa	And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations]
41	أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ	Alla tazir wazirah wizr ukhra	That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another
42	وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ	Wa-ann laysa li-l-insan illa ma sa’a	And that there is not for a person except that [for which] he strives
43	وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ	Wa-anna sa’yahu sawf yura	And that his effort will be seen
44	ثُمَّ يُجْزَاهُ الْجَزَاءَ الْأَوْفَىٰ	Thumma yujzahu al-jaza al-awfa	Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense
45	وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الْمُنتَهَىٰ	Wa-anna ila rabbika al-muntaha	And that to your Lord is the finality
46	وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ	Wa-annahu huwa adhaka wa abka	And that it is He who causes laughter and causes weeping
47	وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا	Wa-annahu huwa amat wa ahya	And that it is He who causes death and gives life
48	وَأَنَّهُ خَلَقَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنثَىٰ	Wa-annahu khalaqa az-zawjayn az-zakar wa al-untha	And that He created the two mates – the male and female
49	مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ	Min nutfatin idha tumna	From a sperm-drop when it is emitted
50	وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُخْرَىٰ	Wa-anna alayhi an-nasha al-ukhra	And that upon Him is the other creation
51	وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ	Wa-annahu huwa aghna wa aqna	And that it is He who enriches and suffices
52	وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ رَبُّ الشِّعْرَىٰ	Wa-annahu huwa rabb ash-shira	And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius
53	وَأَنَّهُ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا الْأُولَىٰ	Wa-annahu ahlaka aad al-ula	And that He destroyed ‘Ad, the former
54	وَثَمُودَ فَمَا أَبْقَىٰ	Wa thamud fa ma abqa	And Thamud, and He did not spare
55	وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ	Wa qawm nuh min qablu	And the people of Noah before; indeed, they were more unjust and more transgressive
56	وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ	Wa al-mutafika ahwa	And the overturned cities He caused to fall
57	فَغَشَّاهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ	Fa-ghashaha ma ghasha	So there covered them that which covered [them]
58	فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ	Fa-bi-ayy alaa rabbika tatamaraa	So which of the favors of your Lord do you dispute
59	هَٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّن النُّذُرِ الْأُولَىٰ	Haza nazir min an-nudhur al-ula	This is a warner from among the warners of old
60	أَزِفَتِ الْآزِفَةُ	Azifat al-azifa	The Approaching Day has come near
61	لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ	Laysa laha min dunillah kashifa	There is not for it any remover other than Him
62	أَفَبِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ	Afa-bi-haza al-hadith antum mudhnun	Then in this hadith do you wonder
