Surah Al-Mu’minun (سورة المؤمنون) — Chapter 23: “The Believers”

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm — In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

1	قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ	Qad aflaḥa al-mu’minūna	Certainly will the believers have succeeded —
2	الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ	Al-ladhīna hum fī ṣalātihim khāshi’ūna	They who are during their prayer humbly submissive
3	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ	Wal-ladhīna hum ‘ani al-laghwi mu’riḍūna	And they who turn away from ill speech
4	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَاةِ فَاعِلُونَ	Wal-ladhīna hum lizzakāti fā’ilūna	And they who are observant of zakah
5	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ	Wal-ladhīna hum lifurūjihim ḥāfiẓūna	And they who guard their private parts
6	إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ	Illā ‘alā azwājihim aw mā malakat aymānuhum fa-innahum ghayru malūmīna	Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed —
7	فَمَنِ ابْتَغَىٰ وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ	Famani ibtaghā warā’a dhālika fa-ulā’ika humu al-‘ādūna	But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors —
8	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ	Wal-ladhīna hum li-amānātihim wa ‘ahdihim rā’ūna	And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
9	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَوَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ	Wal-ladhīna hum ‘alā ṣalawātihim yuḥāfiẓūna	And they who carefully maintain their prayers —
10	أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُونَ	Ulā’ika humu al-wārithūna	Those are the inheritors
11	الَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ	Al-ladhīna yarithūna al-firdawsa hum fīhā khālidūna	Who will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally.
12	وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ سُلَالَةٍ مِنْ طِينٍ	Wa laqad khalaqnā al-insāna min sulālatin min ṭīnin	And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.
13	ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَاهُ نُطْفَةً فِي قَرَارٍ مَكِينٍ	Thumma ja’alnāhu nuṭfatan fī qarārin makīnin	Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging.
14	ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا النُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقْنَا الْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةً فَخَلَقْنَا الْمُضْغَةَ عِظَامًا فَكَسَوْنَا الْعِظَامَ لَحْمًا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأْنَاهُ خَلْقًا آخَرَ ۚ فَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ	Thumma khalaqnā an-nuṭfata ‘alaqatan fakhalaqnā al-‘alaqata muḍghatan fakhalaqnā al-muḍghata ‘iẓāman fakasawnā al-‘iẓāma laḥman thumma anshaʼnāhu khalqan ākhara fatabāraka Allāhu aḥsanu al-khāliqīna	Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.
15	ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ لَمَيِّتُونَ	Thumma innakum ba’da dhālika lamayyitūna	Then indeed, after that you are to die.
16	ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ تُبْعَثُونَ	Thumma innakum yawma al-qiyāmati tub’athūna	Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.
17	وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعَ طَرَائِقَ وَمَا كُنَّا عَنِ الْخَلْقِ غَافِلِينَ	Wa laqad khalaqnā fawqakum sab’a ṭarā’iqa wa mā kunnā ‘ani al-khalqi ghāfilīna	And We have already created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware.
18	وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً بِقَدَرٍ فَأَسْكَنَّاهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ ۖ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰ ذَهَابٍ بِهِ لَقَادِرُونَ	Wa anzalnā mina as-samā’i mā’an biqadarin fa-askannāhu fī al-arḍi wa innā ‘alā dhahābin bihi laqādirūna	And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are able to take it away.
19	فَأَنْشَأْنَا لَكُمْ بِهِ جَنَّاتٍ مِنْ نَخِيلٍ وَأَعْنَابٍ لَكُمْ فِيهَا فَوَاكِهُ كَثِيرَةٌ وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ	Fa-anshaʼnā lakum bihi jannātin min nakhīlin wa a’nābin lakum fīhā fawākihu kathīratun wa minhā ta’kulūna	And We produced for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are many fruits, and from them you eat.
20	وَشَجَرَةً تَخْرُجُ مِنْ طُورِ سَيْنَاءَ تَنْبُتُ بِالدُّهْنِ وَصِبْغٍ لِلْآكِلِينَ	Wa shajaratan takhruju min ṭūri saynā’a tanbutu bidduhni wa ṣibghin lil-ākilīna	And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat.
21	وَإِنَّ لَكُمْ فِي الْأَنْعَامِ لَعِبْرَةً ۖ نُسْقِيكُمْ مِمَّا فِي بُطُونِهَا وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا مَنَافِعُ كَثِيرَةٌ وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ	Wa inna lakum fī al-an’āmi la’ibratan nusqīkum mimmā fī buṭūnihā wa lakum fīhā manāfi’u kathīratun wa minhā ta’kulūna	And indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat.
22	وَعَلَيْهَا وَعَلَى الْفُلْكِ تُحْمَلُونَ	Wa ‘alayhā wa ‘alā al-fulki tuḥmalūna	And upon them and on ships you are carried.
23	وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ فَقَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ ۖ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ	Wa laqad arsalnā Nūḥan ilā qawmihi faqāla yā qawmi u’budū Allāha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu afalā tattaqūna	And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?”
24	فَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ قَوْمِهِ مَا هَٰذَا إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَأَنْزَلَ مَلَائِكَةً مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَٰذَا فِي آبَائِنَا الْأَوَّلِينَ	Faqāla al-mala’u al-ladhīna kafarū min qawmihi mā hādhā illā basharun mithlukum yurīdu an yatafaḍḍala ‘alaykum wa law shā’a Allāhu la-anzala malā’ikatan mā sami’nā bihādhā fī ābā’inā al-awwalīna	But the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, “This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to make himself superior to you. And if Allah had willed, He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers.
25	إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا رَجُلٌ بِهِ جِنَّةٌ فَتَرَبَّصُوا بِهِ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ	In huwa illā rajulun bihi jinnatun fatarabbaṣū bihi ḥattā ḥīnin	He is not but a man possessed with madness, so wait concerning him for a time.”
26	قَالَ رَبِّ انْصُرْنِي بِمَا كَذَّبُونِ	Qāla rabbi unṣurnī bimā kadhdhabūni	[Noah] said, “My Lord, support me because they have denied me.”
27	فَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْهِ أَنِ اصْنَعِ الْفُلْكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا وَوَحْيِنَا فَإِذَا جَاءَ أَمْرُنَا وَفَارَ التَّنُّورُ ۙ فَاسْلُكْ فِيهَا مِنْ كُلٍّ زَوْجَيْنِ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا مَنْ سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ الْقَوْلُ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَلَا تُخَاطِبْنِي فِي الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا ۖ إِنَّهُمْ مُغْرَقُونَ	Fa-awḥaynā ilayhi ani iṣna’i al-fulka bi-a’yuninā wa waḥyinā fa-idhā jā’a amrunā wa fāra at-tannūru fasluk fīhā min kullin zawjayni ithnayni wa ahlaka illā man sabaqa ‘alayhi al-qawlu minhum wa lā tukhāṭibnī fī al-ladhīna ẓalamū innahum mughraqūna	So We inspired to him, “Construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration, and when Our command comes and the oven overflows, put into it from each [creature] two mates and your family, except him for whom the word has already gone forth. And do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are to be drowned.
28	فَإِذَا اسْتَوَيْتَ أَنْتَ وَمَنْ مَعَكَ عَلَى الْفُلْكِ فَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي نَجَّانَا مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ	Fa-idhā istawayta anta wa man ma’aka ‘alā al-fulki faquli al-ḥamdu lillāhi al-ladhī najjānā mina al-qawmi aẓ-ẓālimīna	And when you have boarded the ship, you and those with you, then say, ‘Praise to Allah who has saved us from the wrongdoing people.’
29	وَقُلْ رَبِّ أَنْزِلْنِي مُنْزَلًا مُبَارَكًا وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الْمُنْزِلِينَ	Wa qul rabbi anzilnī munzalan mubārakan wa anta khayru al-munzilīna	And say, ‘My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].'”
30	إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ وَإِنْ كُنَّا لَمُبْتَلِينَ	Inna fī dhālika la-āyātin wa in kunnā lamubtalīna	Indeed in that are signs, and indeed We are ever testing [Our servants].
31	ثُمَّ أَنْشَأْنَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ قَرْنًا آخَرِينَ	Thumma anshaʼnā min ba’dihim qarnan ākharīna	Then We produced after them a generation of others.
32	فَأَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِنْهُمْ أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ ۖ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ	Fa-arsalnā fīhim rasūlan minhum ani u’budū Allāha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu afalā tattaqūna	And We sent among them a messenger from themselves, [saying], “Worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?”
33	وَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِلِقَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ وَأَتْرَفْنَاهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا مَا هَٰذَا إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ يَأْكُلُ مِمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ مِنْهُ وَيَشْرَبُ مِمَّا تَشْرَبُونَ	Wa qāla al-mala’u min qawmihi al-ladhīna kafarū wa kadhdhabū biliqā’i al-ākhirati wa atrafnāhum fī al-ḥayāti ad-dunyā mā hādhā illā basharun mithlukum ya’kulu mimmā ta’kulūna minhu wa yashrabu mimmā tashrabūna	And the eminent among his people who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, while We had given them luxury in the worldly life, said, “This is not but a man like yourselves. He eats of that from which you eat and drinks of what you drink.
34	وَلَئِنْ أَطَعْتُمْ بَشَرًا مِثْلَكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَخَاسِرُونَ	Wa la’in aṭa’tum basharan mithlakum innakum idhan lakhāsirūna	And if you obey a man like yourselves, indeed, you would then be losers.
35	أَيَعِدُكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ إِذَا مِتُّمْ وَكُنْتُمْ تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَنَّكُمْ مُخْرَجُونَ	Aya’idukum annakum idhā mittum wa kuntum turāban wa ‘iẓāman annakum mukhrajūna	Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones that you will be brought forth [once more]?
36	هَيْهَاتَ هَيْهَاتَ لِمَا تُوعَدُونَ	Hayhāta hayhāta limā tū’adūna	How far, how far, is that which you are promised.
37	إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا الدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَبْعُوثِينَ	In hiya illā ḥayātunā ad-dunyā namūtu wa naḥyā wa mā naḥnu bimab’ūthīna	Life is not but our worldly life — we die and live, but we will not be resurrected.
38	إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا رَجُلٌ افْتَرَىٰ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا وَمَا نَحْنُ لَهُ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ	In huwa illā rajulun iftarā ‘alā Allāhi kadhiban wa mā naḥnu lahu bimu’minīna	He is not but a man who has invented a lie about Allah, and we will not believe him.”
39	قَالَ رَبِّ انْصُرْنِي بِمَا كَذَّبُونِ	Qāla rabbi unṣurnī bimā kadhdhabūni	He said, “My Lord, support me because they have denied me.”
40	قَالَ عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ لَيُصْبِحُنَّ نَادِمِينَ	Qāla ‘ammā qalīlin layuṣbiḥunna nādimīna	[Allah] said, “After a little, they will surely become regretful.”
41	فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ بِالْحَقِّ فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً ۚ فَبُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ	Fa-akhadhat-humu aṣ-ṣayḥatu bilḥaqqi faja’alnāhum ghuthā’an fabu’dan lilqawmi aẓ-ẓālimīna	So the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] refuse. Then away with the wrongdoing people.
42	ثُمَّ أَنْشَأْنَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ قُرُونًا آخَرِينَ	Thumma anshaʼnā min ba’dihim qurūnan ākharīna	Then We produced after them other generations.
43	مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ	Mā tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahā wa mā yasta’khirūna	No nation will precede its term, nor will they delay [it].
44	ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا تَتْرَىٰ ۖ كُلَّ مَا جَاءَ أُمَّةً رَسُولُهَا كَذَّبُوهُ ۚ فَأَتْبَعْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ بَعْضًا وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ أَحَادِيثَ ۚ فَبُعْدًا لِقَوْمٍ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ	Thumma arsalnā rusulanā tatrā kulla mā jā’a ummatan rasūluhā kadhdhabūhu fa-atba’nā ba’ḍahum ba’ḍan wa ja’alnāhum aḥādītha fabu’dan liqawmin lā yu’minūna	Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations. So away with a people who do not believe.
45	ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَأَخَاهُ هَارُونَ بِآيَاتِنَا وَسُلْطَانٍ مُبِينٍ	Thumma arsalnā Mūsā wa akhāhu Hārūna bi-āyātinā wa sulṭānin mubīnin	Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and a clear authority
46	إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَئِهِ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا عَالِينَ	Ilā Fir’awna wa mala’ihi fastakbarū wa kānū qawman ‘ālīna	To Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were arrogant and were a haughty people.
47	فَقَالُوا أَنُؤْمِنُ لِبَشَرَيْنِ مِثْلِنَا وَقَوْمُهُمَا لَنَا عَابِدُونَ	Faqālū anu’minu libasharayni mithlinā wa qawmuhumā lanā ‘ābidūna	They said, “Should we believe two men like ourselves while their people are for us in servitude?”
48	فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا فَكَانُوا مِنَ الْمُهْلَكِينَ	Fakadhdhabūhumā fakānū mina al-muhlakīna	So they denied them and were of those destroyed.
49	وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَى الْكِتَابَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ	Wa laqad ātaynā Mūsā al-kitāba la’allahum yahtadūna	And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture that perhaps they would be guided.
50	وَجَعَلْنَا ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَأُمَّهُ آيَةً وَآوَيْنَاهُمَا إِلَىٰ رَبْوَةٍ ذَاتِ قَرَارٍ وَمَعِينٍ	Wa ja’alnā ibna Maryama wa ummahu āyatan wa āwaynāhumā ilā rabwatin dhāti qarārin wa ma’īnin	And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign and sheltered them within a high ground having level [areas] and flowing water.
51	يَا أَيُّهَا الرُّسُلُ كُلُوا مِنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَاعْمَلُوا صَالِحًا ۖ إِنِّي بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌ	Yā ayyuhā ar-rusulu kulū mina aṭ-ṭayyibāti wa’malū ṣāliḥan innī bimā ta’malūna ‘alīmun	O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness. Indeed, I am Knowing of what you do.
52	وَإِنَّ هَٰذِهِ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً وَأَنَا رَبُّكُمْ فَاتَّقُونِ	Wa inna hādhihi ummatukum ummatan wāḥidatan wa anā rabbukum fattaqūni	And indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so fear Me.
53	فَتَقَطَّعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ زُبُرًا ۖ كُلُّ حِزْبٍ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ فَرِحُونَ	Fataqaṭṭa’ū amrahum baynahum zuburan kullu ḥizbin bimā ladayhim fariḥūna	But the people divided their religion among them into sects — each faction, in what it has, rejoicing.
54	فَذَرْهُمْ فِي غَمْرَتِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ	Fadharhum fī ghamratihim ḥattā ḥīnin	So leave them in their confusion for a time.
55	أَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ	Ayaḥsabūna annamā numidduhum bihi min mālin wa banīna	Do they think that what We extend to them of wealth and children
56	نُسَارِعُ لَهُمْ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ ۚ بَلْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ	Nusāri’u lahum fī al-khayrāti bal lā yash’urūna	Is [because] We hasten for them good things? Rather, they do not perceive.
57	إِنَّ الَّذِينَ هُمْ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ رَبِّهِمْ مُشْفِقُونَ	Inna al-ladhīna hum min khashyati rabbihim mushfiqūna	Indeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord
58	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ بِآيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ يُؤْمِنُونَ	Wal-ladhīna hum bi-āyāti rabbihim yu’minūna	And they who believe in the signs of their Lord
59	وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ بِرَبِّهِمْ لَا يُشْرِكُونَ	Wal-ladhīna hum birabbihim lā yushrikūna	And they who do not associate anything with their Lord
60	وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوْا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ	Wal-ladhīna yu’tūna mā ātaw wa qulūbuhum wajilatun annahum ilā rabbihim rāji’ūna	And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord —
61	أُولَٰئِكَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ وَهُمْ لَهَا سَابِقُونَ	Ulā’ika yusāri’ūna fī al-khayrāti wa hum lahā sābiqūna	It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein.
62	وَلَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۖ وَلَدَيْنَا كِتَابٌ يَنْطِقُ بِالْحَقِّ ۚ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ	Wa lā nukallifu nafsan illā wus’ahā wa ladaynā kitābun yanṭiqu bilḥaqqi wa hum lā yuẓlamūna	And We do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged.
63	بَلْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِنْ هَٰذَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَٰلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ	Bal qulūbuhum fī ghamratin min hādhā wa lahum a’mālun min dūni dhālika hum lahā ‘āmilūna	But their hearts are covered with confusion over this, and they have [evil] deeds besides that which they are doing,
64	حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَخَذْنَا مُتْرَفِيهِمْ بِالْعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمْ يَجْأَرُونَ	Ḥattā idhā akhadhnā mutrafīhim bilʻadhābi idhā hum yajʼarūna	Until when We seize their affluent ones with punishment, at once they are crying [to Allah] for help.
65	لَا تَجْأَرُوا الْيَوْمَ ۖ إِنَّكُمْ مِنَّا لَا تُنْصَرُونَ	Lā tajʼarū al-yawma innakum minnā lā tunṣarūna	Do not cry out today. Indeed, you will not be helped by Us.
66	قَدْ كَانَتْ آيَاتِي تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنْتُمْ عَلَىٰ أَعْقَابِكُمْ تَنْكِصُونَ	Qad kānat āyātī tutlā ‘alaykum fakuntum ‘alā a’qābikum tankiṣūna	My verses had already been recited to you, but you were turning back on your heels
67	مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ سَامِرًا تَهْجُرُونَ	Mustakbirīna bihi sāmiran tahjurūna	In arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking evil nonsense.
68	أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُوا الْقَوْلَ أَمْ جَاءَهُمْ مَا لَمْ يَأْتِ آبَاءَهُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ	Afalam yaddabbarū al-qawla am jā’ahum mā lam ya’ti ābā’ahumu al-awwalīna	Then have they not reflected over the words, or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers?
69	أَمْ لَمْ يَعْرِفُوا رَسُولَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَهُ مُنْكِرُونَ	Am lam ya’rifū rasūlahum fahum lahu munkirūna	Or did they not know their messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging?
70	أَمْ يَقُولُونَ بِهِ جِنَّةٌ ۚ بَلْ جَاءَهُمْ بِالْحَقِّ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ لِلْحَقِّ كَارِهُونَ	Am yaqūlūna bihi jinnatun bal jā’ahum bilḥaqqi wa aktharuhum lilḥaqqi kārihūna	Or do they say, “In him is madness”? Rather, he has brought them the truth, but most of them, to the truth, are averse.
71	وَلَوِ اتَّبَعَ الْحَقُّ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ لَفَسَدَتِ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ وَمَنْ فِيهِنَّ ۚ بَلْ أَتَيْنَاهُمْ بِذِكْرِهِمْ فَهُمْ عَنْ ذِكْرِهِمْ مُعْرِضُونَ	Wa lawi ittaba’a al-ḥaqqu ahwā’ahum lafasadati as-samāwātu wal-arḍu wa man fīhinna bal ataynāhum bidhikrihim fahum ‘an dhikrihim mu’riḍūna	But if the Truth had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away.
72	أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ خَرْجًا فَخَرَاجُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ	Am tas’aluhum kharjan fakharāju rabbika khayrun wa huwa khayru ar-rāziqīna	Or do you, [O Muhammad], ask them for payment? But the reward of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers.
73	وَإِنَّكَ لَتَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ	Wa innaka latad’ūhum ilā ṣirāṭin mustaqīmin	But indeed, you invite them to a straight path.
74	وَإِنَّ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ عَنِ الصِّرَاطِ لَنَاكِبُونَ	Wa inna al-ladhīna lā yu’minūna bil-ākhirati ‘ani aṣ-ṣirāṭi lanākibūna	And indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path.
75	وَلَوْ رَحِمْنَاهُمْ وَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِمْ مِنْ ضُرٍّ لَلَجُّوا فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ	Wa law raḥimnāhum wa kashafnā mā bihim min ḍurrin lalajjū fī ṭughyānihim ya’mahūna	And even if We had mercy upon them and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.
76	وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِالْعَذَابِ فَمَا اسْتَكَانُوا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَ	Wa laqad akhadhnāhum bil’adhābi famā istakānū lirabbihim wa mā yataḍarra’ūna	And We had already seized them with punishment, but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate,
77	حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ بَابًا ذَا عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ إِذَا هُمْ فِيهِ مُبْلِسُونَ	Ḥattā idhā fataḥnā ‘alayhim bāban dhā ‘adhābin shadīdin idhā hum fīhi mublisūna	Until when We open before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair.
78	وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَنْشَأَ لَكُمُ السَّمْعَ وَالْأَبْصَارَ وَالْأَفْئِدَةَ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَا تَشْكُرُونَ	Wa huwa al-ladhī anshaʼa lakumu as-sam’a wal-abṣāra wal-af’idata qalīlan mā tashkurūna	And it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.
79	وَهُوَ الَّذِي ذَرَأَكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ	Wa huwa al-ladhī dhara’akum fī al-arḍi wa ilayhi tuḥsharūna	And it is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.
80	وَهُوَ الَّذِي يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَلَهُ اخْتِلَافُ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ	Wa huwa al-ladhī yuḥyī wa yumītu wa lahu ikhtilāfu al-layli wan-nahāri afalā ta’qilūna	And it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason?
81	بَلْ قَالُوا مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ الْأَوَّلُونَ	Bal qālū mithla mā qāla al-awwalūna	Rather, they say like what the former peoples said.
82	قَالُوا أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ	Qālū a-idhā mitnā wa kunnā turāban wa ‘iẓāman a-innā lamab’ūthūna	They said, “When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
83	لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا نَحْنُ وَآبَاؤُنَا هَٰذَا مِنْ قَبْلُ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ	Laqad wu’idnā naḥnu wa ābā’unā hādhā min qablu in hādhā illā asāṭīru al-awwalīna	We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples.”
84	قُلْ لِمَنِ الْأَرْضُ وَمَنْ فِيهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ	Qul limani al-arḍu wa man fīhā in kuntum ta’lamūna	Say, [O Muhammad], “To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?”
85	سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ	Sayaqūlūna lillāhi qul afalā tadhakkarūna	They will say, “To Allah.” Say, “Then will you not remember?”
86	قُلْ مَنْ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ	Qul man rabbu as-samāwāti as-sab’i wa rabbu al-‘arshi al-‘aẓīmi	Say, “Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?”
87	سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ	Sayaqūlūna lillāhi qul afalā tattaqūna	They will say, “[They belong] to Allah.” Say, “Then will you not fear Him?”
88	قُلْ مَنْ بِيَدِهِ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُوَ يُجِيرُ وَلَا يُجَارُ عَلَيْهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ	Qul man biyadihi malakūtu kulli shay’in wa huwa yujīru wa lā yujāru ‘alayhi in kuntum ta’lamūna	Say, “In whose hand is the realm of all things — and He protects while none can protect against Him — if you should know?”
89	سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ فَأَنَّىٰ تُسْحَرُونَ	Sayaqūlūna lillāhi qul fa-annā tusḥarūna	They will say, “[All belongs] to Allah.” Say, “Then how are you deluded?”
90	بَلْ أَتَيْنَاهُمْ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ	Bal ataynāhum bilḥaqqi wa innahum lakādhibūna	Rather, We have brought them the truth, and indeed they are liars.
91	مَا اتَّخَذَ اللَّهُ مِنْ وَلَدٍ وَمَا كَانَ مَعَهُ مِنْ إِلَٰهٍ ۚ إِذًا لَذَهَبَ كُلُّ إِلَٰهٍ بِمَا خَلَقَ وَلَعَلَا بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ ۚ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ	Mā ittakhadha Allāhu min waladin wa mā kāna ma’ahu min ilāhin idhan ladhahaba kullu ilāhin bimā khalaqa wa la’alā ba’ḍuhum ‘alā ba’ḍin subḥāna Allāhi ‘ammā yaṣifūna	Allah has not taken any son, nor has there ever been with Him any deity. [If there had been], then each deity would have taken what it created, and some of them would have sought to overcome others. Exalted is Allah above what they describe [Him as having].
92	عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَتَعَالَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ	‘Ālimi al-ghaybi wash-shahādati fata’ālā ‘ammā yushrikūna	[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, so high is He above what they associate [with Him].
93	قُلْ رَبِّ إِمَّا تُرِيَنِّي مَا يُوعَدُونَ	Qul rabbi immā turiyannī mā yū’adūna	Say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised,
94	رَبِّ فَلَا تَجْعَلْنِي فِي الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ	Rabbi falā taj’alnī fī al-qawmi aẓ-ẓālimīna	My Lord, then do not place me among the wrongdoing people.”
95	وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰ أَنْ نُرِيَكَ مَا نَعِدُهُمْ لَقَادِرُونَ	Wa innā ‘alā an nuriyaka mā na’iduhum laqādirūna	And indeed, We are able to show you what We have promised them.
96	ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ السَّيِّئَةَ ۚ نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَصِفُونَ	Idfa’ billatī hiya aḥsanu as-sayyi’ata naḥnu a’lamu bimā yaṣifūna	Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe.
97	وَقُلْ رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ	Wa qul rabbi a’ūdhu bika min hamazāti ash-shayāṭīni	And say, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,
98	وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ	Wa a’ūdhu bika rabbi an yaḥḍurūni	And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me.”
99	حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ رَبِّ ارْجِعُونِ	Ḥattā idhā jā’a aḥadahumu al-mawtu qāla rabbi irji’ūni	[For such is the state of the disbelievers] until, when death comes to one of them, he says, “My Lord, send me back
100	لَعَلِّي أَعْمَلُ صَالِحًا فِيمَا تَرَكْتُ ۚ كَلَّا ۚ إِنَّهَا كَلِمَةٌ هُوَ قَائِلُهَا ۖ وَمِنْ وَرَائِهِمْ بَرْزَخٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ	La’allī a’malu ṣāliḥan fīmā taraktu kallā innahā kalimatun huwa qā’iluhā wa min warā’ihim barzakhun ilā yawmi yub’athūna	That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.” No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.
101	فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَلَا أَنْسَابَ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَلَا يَتَسَاءَلُونَ	Fa-idhā nufikha fī aṣ-ṣūri falā ansāba baynahum yawma’idhin wa lā yatasā’alūna	So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another.
102	فَمَنْ ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ	Faman thaqulat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulā’ika humu al-mufliḥūna	And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] — it is they who are the successful.
103	وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ فِي جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدُونَ	Wa man khaffat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulā’ika al-ladhīna khasirū anfusahum fī jahannama khālidūna	But those whose scales are light — those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally.
104	تَلْفَحُ وُجُوهَهُمُ النَّارُ وَهُمْ فِيهَا كَالِحُونَ	Talfaḥu wujūhahumu an-nāru wa hum fīhā kāliḥūna	The Fire will scorch their faces, and they therein will grin with bared teeth.
105	أَلَمْ تَكُنْ آيَاتِي تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنْتُمْ بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ	Alam takun āyātī tutlā ‘alaykum fakuntum bihā tukadhdhibūna	[It will be said], “Were not Our verses recited to you and you used to deny them?”
106	قَالُوا رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوْمًا ضَالِّينَ	Qālū rabbanā ghalabat ‘alaynā shiqwatunā wa kunnā qawman ḍāllīna	They will say, “Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us, and we were a people astray.
107	رَبَّنَا أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْهَا فَإِنْ عُدْنَا فَإِنَّا ظَالِمُونَ	Rabbanā akhrijnā minhā fa-in ‘udnā fa-innā ẓālimūna	Our Lord, remove us from it, and if we were to return [to evil], we would indeed be wrongdoers.”
108	قَالَ اخْسَئُوا فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ	Qāla ikhsa’ū fīhā wa lā tukallimūni	He will say, “Remain despised therein, and do not speak to Me.”
109	إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِنْ عِبَادِي يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ	Innahu kāna farīqun min ‘ibādī yaqūlūna rabbanā āmannā faghfir lanā warḥamnā wa anta khayru ar-rāḥimīna	Indeed, there was a party of My servants who said, ‘Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.’
110	فَاتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا حَتَّىٰ أَنْسَوْكُمْ ذِكْرِي وَكُنْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ تَضْحَكُونَ	Fattakhadhtumūhum sikhriyyan ḥattā ansawkum dhikrī wa kuntum minhum taḍḥakūna	But you took them in mockery to the point that they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them,
111	إِنِّي جَزَيْتُهُمُ الْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ	Innī jazaytuhumu al-yawma bimā ṣabarū annahum humu al-fā’izūna	Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance — that they are the attainers [of success].
112	قَالَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَ	Qāla kam labithtum fī al-arḍi ‘adada sinīna	[Allah] will say, “How long did you remain on earth in number of years?”
113	قَالُوا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ فَاسْأَلِ الْعَادِّينَ	Qālū labithnā yawman aw ba’ḍa yawmin fas’ali al-‘āddīna	They will say, “We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate.”
114	قَالَ إِنْ لَبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۖ لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ	Qāla in labithtum illā qalīlan law annakum kuntum ta’lamūna	He will say, “You stayed not but a little — if only you had known.
115	أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ عَبَثًا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ	Afaḥasibtum annamā khalaqnākum ‘abathan wa annakum ilaynā lā turja’ūna	Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?”
116	فَتَعَالَى اللَّهُ الْمَلِكُ الْحَقُّ ۖ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ	Fata’ālā Allāhu al-maliku al-ḥaqqu lā ilāha illā huwa rabbu al-‘arshi al-karīmi	So exalted is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne.
117	وَمَنْ يَدْعُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ لَا بُرْهَانَ لَهُ بِهِ فَإِنَّمَا حِسَابُهُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا يُفْلِحُ الْكَافِرُونَ	Wa man yad’u ma’a Allāhi ilāhan ākhara lā burhāna lahu bihi fa-innamā ḥisābuhu ‘inda rabbihi innahu lā yufliḥu al-kāfirūna	And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof — then his reckoning is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
118	وَقُلْ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ	Wa qul rabbi ighfir warḥam wa anta khayru ar-rāḥimīna	And, [O Muhammad], say, “My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.”
