Surah Sajdah Transliteration and Translation

Surah Sajdah confuses many readers the moment they reach a certain verse and notice a small prostration sign in the margin of their Mushaf. Some pause, unsure what to do. Others skip past it entirely, missing a practice the Prophet (PBUH) followed regularly.

Indeed, we are [now] certain.’
13وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَآتَيْنَا كُلَّ نَفْسٍ هُدَاهَا وَلَٰكِنْ حَقَّ الْقَوْلُ مِنِّي لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَWa-law shi’na la-ataina kulla nafs hudaha wa-lakin haqq al-qawl minni la-amlaan jahannam min al-jinni wa-an-nas ajma’inAnd if We had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word from Me will come into effect [that] ‘I will surely fill Hell with jinn and people, all together.’
14فَذُوقُوا بِمَا نَسِيتُمْ لِقَاءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَٰذَا إِنَّا نَسِينَاكُمْ وَذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْخُلْدِ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَFa-dhawqu bi-ma nasiytum liqa yawmikum hadha inna nasiynakum wa-dhawqu adhab al-khulud bi-ma kuntum ta’malunSo taste [the punishment]. For you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours, and indeed, We [too] have forgotten you. And taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do.’
15إِنَّمَا يُؤْمِنُ بِآيَاتِنَا الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهَا خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا وَسَبَّحُوا بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ وَهُمْ لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَInnama yu’min bi-ayatin alladhina idha dhukkiraw biha kharru sujjadan wa-sabbahubihamd rabbihim wa-hum la yastakbirunOnly those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.
Tatajafa junubuhum ‘an al-mada’i ya’d’un rabbahum khawfan wa-tama’ wa-mimma razaqnahum yunfiqunTheir sides forsake their beds, while they call upon their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
17فَلَا تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَّا أُخْفِيَ لَهُم مِّن قُرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَFa-la ta’lam nafs ma akhfiy lahum min qurrat a’yun jaza’an bi-ma kanu ya’malunAnd no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.
18أَفَمَن كَانَ مُؤْمِنًا كَمَن كَانَ فَاسِقًا لَّا يَسْتَوُونَAfaman kana mu’minan kaman kana fasiqan la yastawunThen is one who is a believer like one who is defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.
19أَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَلَهُمْ جَنَّاتُ الْمَأْوَىٰ نُزُلًا بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَAmma alladhina amnu wa-amiliu as-salihat fa-lahum jannat al-ma’wa nuzulan bi-ma kanu ya’malunAs for those who have believed and done righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.
20وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فَسَقُوا فَمَأْوَاهُمُ النَّارُ كُلَّمَا أَرَادُوا أَن يَخْرُجُوا مِنْهَا أُعِيدُوا فِيهَا وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ ذُوقُوا عَذَابَ النَّارِ الَّتِي كُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَWa-amma alladhina fasaqu fa-ma’wahum an-nar kullama aradu an yakhruji minha u’idu fiha wa-qila lahum dhawqu adhab an-nar allaati kuntum biha tukadhdhibunBut as for those who have defiantly disobeyed, their refuge will be the Fire. Every time they wish to exit it, they will be returned to it while being told, ‘Taste the punishment of the Fire, which you used to deny.’
21وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم مِّنَ الْعَذَابِ الْأَدْنَىٰ دُونَ الْعَذَابِ الْأَكْبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَWa-lundhiqannahum min al-adhab al-adna dun al-adhab al-akbar la’allahum yarji’unAnd We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment before the greater punishment, perhaps they will return [to faith].
Wa-man azlam mimman dhukkyra bi-ayat rabbih thumma a’rada ‘anha inna min al-mujrimin muntaqimunAnd who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord and then turns away from them? Indeed, We from the criminals will take retribution.
23وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَى الْكِتَابَ فَلَا تَكُن فِي مِرْيَةٍ مِّن لِّقَائِهِ وَجَعَلْنَاهُ هُدًى لِّبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَWa-laqad atayna Musa al-kitab fa-la takun fi miryah min liqa’ih wa-ja’alnahu hudan li-bani Isra’ilAnd We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so do not be in doubt, [O Muhammad], of his meeting [with Us]. And We made it a guidance for the Children of Israel.
24وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْهُمْ أَئِمَّةً يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُوا وَكَانُوا بِآيَاتِنَا يُوقِنُونَWa-ja’alna minhum a’immah yahdun bi-amrin lamma sabru wa-kanu bi-ayatin yuqinunAnd We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our verses.
25إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَInna rabbak huwa yafsil baynahum yawm al-qiyamah fima kanu fih yakhtalifunIndeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
26أَوَلَمْ يَهْدِ لَهُمْ كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّنَ الْقُرُونِ يَمْشُونَ فِي مَسَاكِنِهِمْ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ أَفَلَا يَسْمَعُونَAwalam yahdi lahum kam ahlakna min qablihim min al-qurun yamshun fi masakinihim inna fi dhallka la-ayat afala yasma’unDoes it not guide them [that] how many generations We destroyed before them, within whose dwellings they walk? Indeed in that are signs. Then do they not hear?
27أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّا نَسُوقُ الْمَاءَ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ الْجُرُزِ فَنُخْرِجُ بِهِ زَرْعًا تَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ أَنْعَامُهُمْ وَأَنفُسُهُمْ أَفَلَا يُبْصِرُونَAwalam yarraw anna nasuq al-ma ila al-ard al-juruz fa-nukhraj bih zara’ ta’kul minhu an’amuhum wa-anfusuhum afala yubsirunHave they not seen that We drive the water to barren land and bring forth crops from which their cattle eat and [they] themselves? Then do they not see?
28وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَٰذَا الْفَتْحُ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَWa-yaqulun mata hadha al-fath in kuntum sadiqinAnd they say, ‘When is this conquest, if you should be truthful?’
29قُلْ يَوْمَ الْفَتْحِ لَا يَنفَعُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِيمَانُهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُنظَرُونَQul yawm al-fath la yanfa’ alladhina kafru imanuhum wa-la hum yunzarunSay, ‘The Day of Conquest – those who disbelieved will not benefit from their faith, nor will they be reprieved.’
30فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ وَانتَظِرْ إِنَّهُم مُّنتَظِرُونَFa-a’rid anhum wa-intazir innahum muntazirunSo turn away from them and wait. Indeed, they are waiting.

The Insight Behind Prostration

Here is the insight worth understanding clearly. Verse 15 describes true believers as those who, upon hearing a reminder of God’s signs, fall down in prostration immediately, glorifying Him without arrogance or delay. That verse is why this surah carries a special sajdah.

Reciting or hearing this verse triggers a recommended prostration outside regular prayer, known as Sajdah al-Tilawah. It is a physical response to a spiritual reminder, connecting belief directly to action rather than leaving it as abstract agreement.

How Many Sajdah in Quran and in Which Surah

A common question readers ask is how many sajdah in Quran and in which surah they occur. According to the Hanafi school, there are 14 verses across the Quran requiring this prostration when recited or heard attentively.

Which surahs have sajdah? Here is the full list according to Hanafi fiqh:

  1. Surah Al-A’raf (7:206)
  2. Surah Ar-Ra’d (13:15)
  3. Surah An-Nahl (16:50)
  4. Surah Al-Isra (17:109)
  5. Surah Maryam (19:58)
  6. Surah Al-Hajj (22:18)
  7. Surah Al-Hajj (22:77)
  8. Surah Al-Furqan (25:60)
  9. Surah An-Naml (27:26)
  10. Surah As-Sajdah (32:15)
  11. Surah Sad (38:24)
  12. Surah Fussilat (41:38)
  13. Surah An-Najm (53:62)
  14. Surah Al-Alaq (96:19)
