Surah Ghafir Transliteration and Translation

Surah Ghafir opens with a promise that many people forget in their busiest, most stressful days: no sin is too big for Allah’s mercy. A lot of Muslims read the Quran page by page but skip past this surah without realizing how much comfort it holds for anyone carrying guilt or worry.

If you want a deeper, page-by-page companion while reading this surah, The Clear Quran by Dr. Mustafa Khattab is a simple, modern translation that many beginners find easy to follow.

What Is Surah Al Ghafir?

Surah Al Ghafir is the 40th chapter of the Quran, and it has 85 verses. It’s a Meccan surah, meaning it was revealed before the Hijrah, during a period when early Muslims faced heavy pressure and mockery from disbelievers in Makkah.

Importance of Ghafir in Daily Life

This chapter isn’t just history about Pharaoh and Musa. It teaches patience under pressure, the value of standing for truth quietly, and trust in Allah when outcomes seem unfair. That’s a lesson every generation needs, not only the first Muslims in Makkah.

11إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُنَادَوْنَ لَمَقْتُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ مِن مَّقْتِكُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ إِذْ تُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى الْإِيمَانِ فَتَكْفُرُونَInnal-lazeena kafaroo yunadawn lamqat-Allaahi akbar min maqtikum anfusakum idh tu’dawn ilal-eeman fa takfuroonVerily, those who disbelieve are called out louder: Certainly, the hatred of Allah is greater than your hatred of one another, as you were called to believe but you refused.
12قَالُوا رَبَّنَا أَمَتَّنَا اثْنَتَيْنِ وَأَحْيَيْتَنَا اثْنَتَيْنِ فَاعْتَرَفْنَا بِذُنُوبِنَا فَهَلْ إِلَىٰ خُرُوجٍ مِّن سَبِيلٍQaloo rabbana amattana ithnayn wa ahyaytana ithnayn faa’tarafna bi dhunubina fa hal ila khuruuj min sabeelThey will say: Our Lord! 13ذَٰلِكُم بِأَنَّهُ إِذَا دُعِيَ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ كَفَرْتُمْ ۖ وَإِن يُشْرَكْ بِهِ تُؤْمِنُوا ۚ فَالْحُكْمُ لِلَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْكَبِيرِDhaalikum bi annahu idha du’i-Allaahu wahdahu kafartum wa in yushrack bihi tu’minoo fal-hukm lillaah-al-aliyy-al-kabeerThat is because when Allah Alone was invoked, you disbelieved, but when partners were joined with Him, you believed! So the judgment is only with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great!
14هُوَ الَّذِي يُرِيكُمْ آيَاتِهِ وَيُنَزِّلُ لَكُم مِّنَ الرِّزْقِ ۚ وَمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ إِلَّا مَن يُنِيبُHuw alladhi yureekum ayatih wa yunazzil lakum min-ar-rizq wa ma yatadhakkar illa man yunebIt is He Who shows you His signs and sends down sustenance for you from the sky. 16رَفِيعُ الدَّرَجَاتِ ذُو الْعَرْشِ يُلْقِي الرُّوحَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ لِيُنذِرَ يَوْمَ التَّلَاقِRafee-ud-darajaat dhu-al-arsh yulqi-ar-ruh min amrih ala man yasha min ibadih linudhir yawm-at-talaqExalted in degrees, Owner of the Throne, He sends the revelation upon whom He wills of His servants that he should warn (men) of the Day of Meeting.
Yawm hum barzioon la yakhfa ala-Allaah minhum shay-un liman-al-mulk-al-yawm lillaah-al-wahid-al-qahharThe Day when they will come forth; nothing of them will be hidden from Allah. Whose is the dominion this Day? (Allah will say:) Allah’s, the One, the Irresistible!
18الْيَوْمَ تُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ ۚ لَا ظُلْمَ الْيَوْمَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِAl-yawm tujza kulla nafs bi ma kasabat la dhulm-al-yawm inn-Allaah sare-ul-hisabThis Day every soul shall be recompensed for what it earned. No injustice (shall be done to anybody). Surely, Allah is Swift in reckoning.
19وَأَنذِرْهُم يَوْمَ الْآزِفَةِ إِذِ الْقُلُوبُ لَدَى الْحَنَاجِرِ كَاظِمِينَ ۚ مَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ مِنْ حَمِيمٍ وَلَا شَفِيعٍ يُطَاعُWa andhirhum yawm-al-azifah idhi-al-qulub lada-al-hanajir kadhimeen ma lildhaalimeen min hameem wa la shafi-in yuta’And warn them of the Day that is drawing near (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) when the hearts will be choking up to the throats. There will be no intimate friend nor an intercessor for the unjust one who could be given heed to.
Ya’lem khaa’inat-al-a’yun wa ma tukhfi-as-sudurHe knows the betrayal of the eyes, and all that the hearts conceal.
21وَاللَّهُ يَقْضِي بِالْحَقِّ ۖ وَالَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ لَا يَقْضُونَ بِشَيْءٍ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُWa-Allaah yaqdhi bil-haqq wa-allazeena yad’oon min dunuh la yaqdhuun bi shay-in inn-Allaah huw-as-samee-ul-baseerAnd Allah will judge with truth. But those to whom they invoke besides Him, they cannot judge anything. Surely, Allah is He Who is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
22أَوَ لَمْ يَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ قَتَلُوهُمْ مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِن تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِهِمْAw lam yaseerot fil-ard fayanthuroo kayf kaan aqibat-allazeena kanu min qablihim qataluhum min fawqihim wa min taht arjulihimHave they not travelled through the land and seen what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength; and they left on the earth greater traces of power than they left. Yet Allah seized them for their sins.
23ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانَت تَأْتِيهِمْ رُسُلُهُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَكَفَرُوا فَأَخَذَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ قَوِيٌّ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِDhaalik bi annahum kaanat ta’teehim rusuluhum bil-bayyinat fa kafaroo fa akhzahum-Allaah innahu qawiyy shadeed-al-iqabThat was because there came to them their messengers with clear proofs, signs and evidences, but they rejected them; so Allah seized them with punishment. Surely, He is All-Strong, Severe in punishment.
Wa laqad arsalna moosa bi ayatina wa sultaanin moobeenAnd indeed We sent Moosa (Moses) with Our signs and a manifest authority.
Ila firawn wa hamaan wa qarun fa qaloo saahir kadhibTo Pharaoh, Hamaan, and Qarun; but they said, A sorcerer, a liar!
26فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُم بِالْحَقِّ مِنْ عِندِنَا قَالُوا اقْتُلُوا أَبْنَاءَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ وَاسْتَحْيُوا نِسَاءَهُمْ ۚ وَمَا كَيْدُ الْكَافِرِينَ إِلَّا فِي ضَلَالٍFa lamma jaa-ahum bil-haqq min indina qaloo-qtulu abnaa-allazeena amanoo ma’hu wasta hyoo nisaa-ahum wa ma kayd-al-kafireeen illa fi dhalaala’lThen when he came to them with the truth from Us, they said, Slay the sons of those who believe with him, and let live their women. But the plot of the disbelievers is nothing but in error.
27وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ ذَرُونِي أَقْتُلْ مُوسَىٰ وَلْيَدْعُ رَبَّهُ ۖ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَن يُبَدِّلَ دِينَكُمْ أَوْ أَن يُظْهِرَ فِي الْأَرْضِ الْفَسَادَWa qaal firawn dharunee aqtul moosa wa li yad’u rabbahu inni akhafu an yubaddil deenakum aw an yuzhir fil-ard-al-fasadAnd Pharaoh said, Let me alone to kill Moosa and let him call upon his Lord. I fear that he may change your religion, or that he may cause mischief to appear in the land.
28وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ إِنِّي عُذْتُ بِرَبِّي وَرَبِّكُم مِّن كُلِّ مُتَكَبِّرٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُ بِيَوْمِ الْحِسَابِWa qaal moosa inni udht bi rabbi wa rabbikum min kull mutakabbir la yu’min bi yawm-al-hisabMoosa said, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Account!
29وَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مُّؤْمِنٌ مِّنْ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَكْتُمُ إِيمَانَهُ أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَن يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ وَقَدْ جَاءَكُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَكُ كَاذِبًا فَعَلَيْهِ كَذِبُهُ ۖ وَإِن يَكُ صَادِقًا فَيُصِيبُكُم بَعْضُ الَّذِي يَعِدُكُمْ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي مَن هُوَ مُسْرِفٌ كَاذِبٌWa qaal rajulun moominun min aal firawn yaktumo eemaanh ataqtulon rajulan an yaqool rabbi-Allaah wa qad jaa-akum bil-bayyinat min rabbikum wa in yakun kadhiban fa alayh kadhihu wa in yakun sadiqan fa yusibukum ba’ath-allazeena ya’idukum inn-Allaah la yahdi man huwa musrif kadhibAnd a believing man from the people of Pharaoh, who hid his faith said: Would you kill a man because he says, My Lord is Allah, and he has come to you with clear signs from your Lord? And if he be a liar, upon him will be (the sin of) his lie; and if he be truthful, then some of that (calamity) whereof he warns you will befall on you. Truly, Allah guides not one who is a transgressor and a liar.
Ya qawm lakum-al-mulk-al-yawm zaahireen fil-ard fa man yansurna min ba’s-Allaah in jaa-ana qaal firawn ma ana bi murikum illa ma ara wa ma ahdeekum illa sabeel-ar-rashadO my people! Yours is the dominion this Day, being uppermost in the land, but who will help us against the punishment of Allah if it comes to us? Pharaoh said, I but show you that which I see, and I guide you only to the path of right conduct!
31وَقَالَ الَّذِي آمَنَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُم مِّثْلَ يَوْمِ الْأَحْزَابِWa qaal alladhi aamana ya qawm inni akhafu alaikum mithl yawm-al-ahzabAnd he who believed said, O my people! I fear for you the like of the Day (of disaster) of the Confederates (the allies).
32مِثْلَ دَأْبِ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَالَّذِينَ مِن بَعْدِهِمْ ۚ وَمَا اللَّهُ يُرِيدُ ظُلْمًا لِّلْعِبَادِMithl dab-i qawm nooh wa aad wa thamud wa-allazeena min ba’adihim wa ma-Allaah yurid dhulman lil-ibadLike the fate of the people of Nuh, and Ad, and Thamud, and those after them. And Allah wills no injustice for (His) servants.
Wa ya qawm inni akhafu alaikum yawm-at-tanadAnd O my people! Truly I fear for you the Day when there will be mutual calling (to each other),
34يَوْمَ تُوَلُّونَ مُدْبِرِينَ مَا لَكُم مِّنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ ۗ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ هَادٍYawm tuwalluun mudbireeen ma lakum min-Allaah min aasim wa man yudhlil-Allaah fa ma lahu min hadThe Day when you will turn your backs fleeing; you will find none to help you from Allah. And whomsoever Allah sends astray, for him there is none to guide.
35وَلَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ يُوسُفُ مِن قَبْلُ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَمَا زِلْتُمْ فِي شَكٍّ مِّمَّا جَاءَكُم بِهِ ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا هَلَكَ قُلْتُمْ لَن يَبْعَثَ اللَّهُ مِن بَعْدِهِ رَسُولًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَن هُوَ مُسْرِفٌ مُّرْتَابٌWa laqad jaa-akum yusuf min qablu bil-bayyinat fa ma ziltum fi shakk mimma jaa-akum bih hatta idha halak qultum lan yab’ath-Allaah min ba’adih rasul kadhaalik yudhill-Allaah man huwa musrif murtabAnd indeed Yusuf (Joseph) came to you in times past with clear signs, but you ceased not to doubt in that which he brought to you, till when he died you said: Allah will not send any apostle after him. Thus Allah leaves astray such as are transgressors and doubters.
36الَّذِينَ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي آيَاتِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَانٍ أَتَاهُمْ ۖ كَبُرَ مَقْتًا عِندَ اللَّهِ وَعِندَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ قَلْبِ مُتَكَبِّرٍ جَبَّارٍAllazeena yujadiloon fi ayaat-Allaah bi ghair sultaan ata-ahum kabur maqtan ind-Allaah wa ind-allazeena amanoo kadhaalik yatba-ul-Allaah ala kull qalb mutakabbir jabbarThose who dispute concerning the signs of Allah without any authority having come to them, (there is) great hatred in the sight of Allah and in the sight of the believers. Thus does Allah set a seal on the heart of every arrogant, tyrant.
Build me a tower that I may reach the ways,
38أَسْبَابَ السَّمَاوَاتِ فَأَطَّلِعَ إِلَىٰ إِلَٰهِ مُوسَىٰ وَإِنِّي لَأَظُنُّهُ كَاذِبًا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ زُيِّنَ لِفِرْعَوْنَ سُوءُ عَمَلِهِ وَصُدَّ عَنِ السَّبِيلِ ۚ وَمَا كَيْدُ فِرْعَوْنَ إِلَّا فِي تَبَابٍAsbab-as-samaawat fa attali-a ila ilah moosa wa inni la-azhunnu hu kadhiban wa kadhaalik zuyyina li firawn su’u amalih wa sudd an-as-sabeel wa ma kayd firawn illa fee tababThe ways of the heavens that I may look upon the God of Moosa! But verily I think he is a liar! And thus was made fair-seeming to Pharaoh the evil of his deeds, and he was hindered from the (Right) Path; and the plot of Pharaoh led to nothing but ruin.
Wa qaal alladhi aamana ya qawm tattabi’oon ahidikum sabeel-ar-rashadAnd he who believed said: O my people! Follow me. I will guide you to the path of rectitude.
Ya qawm inn hazihi-al-hayat-ad-dunya mataa wa inn-al-akhira hiya dar-al-qararO my people! This life of the world is only a (temporary) enjoyment, and verily, the Hereafter, that is the home that will remain forever.
Man amil sayyah fa la yujza illa mithlaha wa man amil salihan min dhakarin aw untha wa huwa moominun fa ula-ik yadkhuloon-al-janna yur-zaqoon fiha bi ghair hisabWhoever works evil, will not be requited except the like thereof; and whoever works a righteous deed, whether male or female, and is a (true) believer (in Islamic Monotheism) such will enter Paradise, where they will be provided therein (with all things in abundance and prosperity) without limit.
Wa ya qawm ma li ad’ookum ila-an-najat wa tad’uunani ila-an-narAnd O my people! I invite you to salvation but you invite me to the Fire!
43تَدْعُونَنِي لِأَكْفُرَ بِاللَّهِ وَأُشْرِكَ بِهِ مَا لَيْسَ لِي بِهِ عِلْمٌ ۖ وَأَنَا أَدْعُوكُمْ إِلَى الْعَزِيزِ الْغَفَّارِTad’uunani li akfur billaah wa ushrrika bih ma laysa li bih ilm wa ana ad’oukum ila-al-azeez-al-ghaffarYou invite me to disbelieve in Allah, and to join with Him in worship others of which I have no knowledge; and I invite you to the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving!
44لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ مَا تَدْعُونَنِي إِلَيْهِ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَعْوَةٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَأَنَّ مَوْلَانَا اللَّهُ وَإِنِّي أُحَذِّرُكُم مِّن يَوْمٍ يَأْتِيكُمLa jaram anna ma tad’uunani ilayh laysa lahu da’wah fil-dunya wa la fil-akhirah wa anna mawlana-Allaah wa inni uhadhdhirukum min yawm ya’teekumNo doubt, that which you call me to has no call in the Duniya (worldly life) and in the Aakhirah (the life after death). And indeed our return is to Allah. And surely, the transgressors will be the dwellers of the Fire!
45فَسَتَذْكُرُونَ مَا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ ۚ وَأُفَوِّضُ أَمْرِي إِلَى اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَصِيرٌ بِالْعِبَادِFa satadh-kuroon ma aqul lakum wa ufa-wwid amri ila-Allaah inn-Allaah baseer bil-ibadSo you will remember what I am telling you, and my affair I leave it to Allah. Surely, Allah is seeing the servants.
46فَوَقَاهُ اللَّهُ سَيِّئَاتِ مَا مَكَرُوا ۖ وَحَاقَ بِآلِ فِرْعَوْنَ سُوءُ الْعَذَابِFa waqahu-Allaah sayyiaat ma makaroo wa haq bi aal firawn su-ul-adhabSo Allah saved him from the evils that they plotted, while an evil torment surrounded the people of Pharaoh.
47النَّارُ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَيْهَا غُدُوًّا وَعِشِيًّا ۚ وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ أَدْخِلُوا آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ أَشَدَّ الْعَذَابِAn-nar yu’radun alaiha ghuduwwan wa isha-an wa yawm taqum-as-sa’ah adkhilul aal firawn ashadda-al-adhabThe Fire; they are exposed to it, morning and evening. And on the Day when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels): Cause Pharaoh’s people to enter the severest torment!
48وَإِذْ يَتَحَاجُّونَ فِي النَّارِ فَيَقُولُ الضُّعَفَاءُ لِلَّذِينَ اسْتَكْبَرُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا لَكُمْ تَبَعًا فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّغْنُونَ عَنَّا نَصِيبًا مِّنَ النَّارِWa idh yatahajjun fil-nar fa yaqul-ad-du’afa lillazeena stakkabru inna kunna lakum taba-an fa hal antum mughnun anna nasib min an-narAnd when they will dispute in the Fire, the weak will say to those who were arrogant: Verily! We were following you; can you then take (from us) some portion of the Fire?
Qaal allazeena stakkabru inna kullin fiha inn-Allaah qad hakam bayn-al-ibadThose who were arrogant will say: We are all in this (Fire). Surely, Allah has judged between (His) servants!
50وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ فِي النَّارِ لِخَزَنَةِ جَهَنَّمَ ادْعُوا رَبَّكُمْ يُخَفِّفْ عَنَّا يَوْمًا مِّنَ الْعَذَابِWa qaal allazeena fin-nar li khazan-at-jahannm-ud’u rabbakum yukhaffif anna yawman min-al-adhabAnd those who are in the Fire will say to the keepers (angels) of Hell: Call upon your Lord to lighten for us the torment for a day!
51قَالُوا أَوَ لَمْ تَكُ تَأْتِيكُمْ رُسُلُكُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ ۖ قَالُوا بَلَىٰ ۚ قَالُوا فَادْعُوا ۚ وَمَا دُعَاءُ الْكَافِرِينَ إِلَّا فِي ضَلَالٍQalu aw lam takun ta’teekum rusulukum bil-bayyinat qaloo bala qalu fa’du wa ma du’a-ul-kafirin illa fee dhalaala’lThey said: Did not your messengers come to you with clear signs? They said: Yes! But the word of torment has been justified against the disbelievers.
Inna lanansur rusulna wa-allazeena amanoo fil-hayat-ad-dunya wa yawm yaqum-al-ashhaadCertainly, We will aid Our messengers and those who believe, in the life of this world, and on the Day when the witnesses will stand forth (i.e. Day of Resurrection),
53يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ الظَّالِمِينَ مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ ۖ وَلَهُمُ اللَّعْنَةُ وَلَهُمْ سُوءُ الدَّارِYawm la yanfa-ul-dhaalimeen ma’dhiratu-hum wa lahum-ul-la’nah wa lahum su-ud-darThe Day when their excuses will not profit the transgressors, and theirs will be the curse, and theirs will be the evil abode (i.e. Hell).
54وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَى الْهُدَىٰ وَأَوْرَثْنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ الْكِتَابَWa laqad ataina moosa-al-huda wa awrathna bani isra’eel-al-kitabAnd indeed We gave Moosa (Moses) the guidance, and We made the Children of Isra’il (Israel) to inherit the Book (the Qur’an).
Hudan wa dhikra li uli-al-albabA guidance and a reminder for men of understanding.
56فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ ۖ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِكَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالْإِبْكَارِFasbbir inn wa’ad-Allaah haqq wa-istafghir li dhanbika wa sabbih bi hamdi rabbika bil-ashiyy wa-al-ibkarSo be patient (O Muhammad). Verily, the Promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness for your sin, and glorify the praises of your Lord in the afternoon and in the early morning.
57إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي آيَاتِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَانٍ أَتَاهُمْ ۖ إِن فِي صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُم بِبَالِغِيهِ ۚ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُInn-allazeena yujadiloon fi ayaat-Allaah bi ghair sultaan ata-ahum in fi sudurahum illa kibrn ma hum bibaligihi fasta’idh billaah innahu huwa-as-samee-ul-baseerSurely those who dispute concerning the Signs of Allah without authority having come to them, there is nothing in their breasts but pride. They will never attain it (guidance). So seek refuge in Allah. Verily, He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
58خَلْقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ النَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَKhalq-as-samawat wal-ard akbar min khalq-an-nas wa lakin akthir-an-nas la ya’lamunThe creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind, yet most of mankind know not.
59وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْأَعْمَىٰ وَالْبَصِيرُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَلَا الْمُسِيءُ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُونَWa ma yastwi-al-a’ma wal-basir wa-allazeena amanoo wa amilul-salihaat wa la-al-musee qalilan ma tatadhakkaroonNor are (alike) the blind and the seeing, and those who believe and do righteous deeds and those who do evil. Little do you remember!
Inn-as-sa’ah la-atiyah la rayb fiha wa lakin akthir-an-nas la yu’minunThe Hour is surely coming, there is no doubt about it, yet most men believe not.
61وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرُونَWa qaal rabbukum ud’unee astajib lakum inn-allazeena yastakbirun an ibadati sa yadkhulun jahannama dakherunAnd your Lord said: Invoke Me, I will respond to your (invocation). But those who are too arrogant to worship Me will surely enter Hell in disgrace.
62اللَّهُ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ اللَّيْلَ لِتَسْكُنُوا فِيهِ وَالنَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَAllaah-alladhi ja’al lakum-al-layl li taskunoo fih wa-an-naha mubsiran inn-Allaah ladhu fadl ala-an-nas wa lakin akthir-an-nas la yashkurunIt is Allah Who has made the night for you that you may rest therein, and the day to give you light. Verily, Allah is full of Grace and Bounty to mankind, yet most of mankind give not thanks.
63ذَٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ خَالِقُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤْفَكُونَDhaalikum-Allaah rabbukum khaliq kull shay-in la ilaha illa huw fa anna tu’fakunThat is Allah, your Lord, the Creator of all things, none has the right to be worshipped but He, and yet you turn away (from Him).
Kadhaalik yu’fak-allazeena kanu bi ayaat-Allaah yajhadunThus are turned away those who deny the signs of Allah.
65اللَّهُ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ قَرَارًا وَالسَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً وَصَوَّرَكُمْ فَأَحْسَنَ صُوَرَكُمْ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ ۖ فَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَAllaah-alladhi ja’al lakum-al-ard qarar wa-as-sama binaa wa sawwarakum fa ahsan suuarakum wa razaqakum min-at-tayyibat dhaalikum-Allaah rabbukum fa tabarak-Allaah rabb-al-alameenIt is Allah Who has made for you the earth as a dwelling place and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape and made your shapes good, and has provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord, so Blessed be Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.
66هُوَ الْحَيُّ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَادْعُوهُ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ ۚ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَHuwa-al-hayy la ilaha illa huwa fa-ud’uh mukhlisin lahu-ad-deen al-hamdu lillaah rabb-al-alameenHe is the Ever Living, none has the right to be worshipped but He. So call upon Him, making your religion purely for Him (Alone). All the praise and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
67قُلْ إِنِّي نُهِيتُ أَنْ أَسْجُدَ لِلَّذِي تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ لَمَّا جَاءَنِيَ الْبَيِّنَاتُ مِن رَّبِّي وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُسْلِمَ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَQul inni nuhit an asjud lilladhi tad’un min dun-Allaah lamma ja-ani-al-bayyinat min rabbi wa umirt an aslim li rabb-al-alameenSay (O Muhammad): Truly, I have been forbidden to worship those whom you call upon besides Allah, since there have come to me clear signs from my Lord, and I am commanded to submit to the Lord of all the worlds.
68هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُم مِّن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُكُمْ طِفْلًا ثُمَّ لِتَبْلُغُوا أَشُدَّكُمْ ثُمَّ لِتَكُونُوا شُيُوخًا ۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن يُتَوَفَّىٰ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ وَلِتَبْلُغُوا أَجَلًا مُّسَمًّى وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَHuwa-alladhi khalaqakum min turab thumma min nutfah thumma min alaqah thumma yukhrijukum tiflan thumma litablughu ashuddakum thumma litak-unoo shuyukhan wa minkum man yutawaffa min qabl wa litablughu ajalan musamman wa la-allakum ta’qilunHe it is Who has created you from dust, then from a Nutfah (drop of semen male and female), then from a Clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Then He brings you out as infants, then (makes you grow) so that you may reach your age of full strength. And among you there is he who dies (young), and among you there is he who is brought back to the miserable old age, so that he knows nothing after having known (much). And (Allah) sees a land dead; when We send down water (rain) to it, it trembles, and grows, and puts forth every kind of beautiful growth (plants).
Alladhi ahya-hu fa-inn-Allaah ahyahu ala inn-Allaah la yashhad lahuThen certainly, it is Allah Who has given it life; surely Allah gives life to the dead, and He is Able to do all things.
70إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَيُصِدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مِّن رِّجْزٍ أَلِيمٌInn-allazeena yakfirun bi ayaat-Allaah wa yasiduun an sabeel lihim adhab min rijz aleemVerily, those who disbelieve in the signs of Allah and turn away from His Path (the way of true Islamic Monotheism) have no power to do so; and unto such shall be a painful torment (in the Hell-fire).
Afanna-allazeena kafaroo lahum ansarun min dun-Allaah qul ara-aytum in kan-Allaah yurid an yudhlani a fa lahu ansarun min dun-Allaah qul hasbuna-Allaah alayh yatawakkul-al-mutawakkilunAre those who disbelieve think that they can take My slaves as protectors (guardians) besides Me? Verily, We have prepared Hell as an entertainment for the disbelievers. Say (O Muhammad): Shall I inform you of something worse than that? The Fire (of Hell) which Allah has promised to those who disbelieve, and worst indeed is that destination!
Qul in kunt dhalalta fa inamma adill ala nafsi wa in ihtadaytu fa bima yuhi ilayya rabbi innahu samee qareebSay (O Muhammad): If I go astray, it is only to my own loss, and if I am guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me. Verily, He is All-Hearing, Ever Near.
73وَلَوْ أَنَّكَ تَرَىٰ إِذِ الظَّالِمُونَ فِي غَمَرَاتِ الْمَوْتِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ بَاسِطُو أَيْدِيهِمْ أَخْرِجُوا أَنفُسَكُمُ ۖ الْيَوْمَ تُجْزَوْنَ عَذَابَ الْهُونِ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ غَيْرَ الْحَقِّ وَكُنتُمْ عَنْ آيَاتِهِ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَWa law annaka tura idhi-az-zhalimuun fi ghamaraati-al-mawt wal-mala-ikah basituu aydihim akhrijoo anfusakum-al-yawm tujzawn adhab-al-hawn bima kuntum taqulun ala-Allaah ghayar-al-haqq wa kuntum an ayatih tastakbirunIf you could but see when the transgressors are in the agonies of death, while the angels are stretching out their hands (saying): Deliver your souls! This day you shall be recompensed with the torment of shame, because you used to tell lies against Allah, and for scorn (rejection) of His Signs.
74وَلَقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا فُرَادَىٰ كَمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَتَرَكْتُم مَّا خَوَّلْنَاكُمْ وَرَاءَ ظُهُورِكُمْ ۚ وَمَا نَرَىٰ مَعَكُمْ شُفَعَاءَكُمُ الَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُمْ أَنَّهُمْ فِيكُمْ شُرَكَاءُ ۚ لَقَد تَّقَطَّعَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَضَلَّ عَنكُم مَّا كُنتُمْ تَزْعُمُونَWa laqad ji’tumu-na furaha kama khalaqnakum awwal marrah wa taraktum ma khawwalna-kum wara zhuhuri-kum wa ma nara ma’akum shufa’a-akum-allazeena za’amtum annahum fi kum shuraka laqad taqatta-a baynikum wa dhalla ankum ma kuntum taz-amunAnd indeed you have come unto Us alone (without your wealth, relatives and followers) as We created you first, and you have left behind your backs all that We gave you. And We see not with you those intercessors (whom you claimed) that they were partners with Allah! Now all relations between you have been cut off, and those whom you claimed (to be your helpers and intercessors) have abandoned you.
75إِنَّ اللَّهَ فَالِقُ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَىٰ ۖ يُخْرِجُ الْحَيَّ مِنَ الْمَيِّتِ وَمُخْرِجُ الْمَيِّتِ مِنَ الْحَيِّ ۖ ذَٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤْفَكُونَInn-Allaah faaliq-al-habb wa-an-nawa yukhraj-al-hayya min-al-mayyit wa mukhraj-al-mayyit min-al-hayy dhaalikum-Allaah fa anna tu’fakunSurely, Allah is the Cleaver of the grain and the date stone. He brings forth the living from the dead; that is Allah, so how are you deluded away from the truth?
76فَالِقُ الْإِصْبَاحِ وَجَعَلَ اللَّيْلَ سَكَنًا وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ حُسْبَانًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِFaaliq-al-issbah wa ja’al-al-layl sakanan wa-ash-shams wa-al-qamar husbaan dhaalik taqdeer-al-azeez-al-aleemThe Cleaver of the daybreak. He has appointed the night for rest and the sun and the moon for reckoning (time). Such is the measuring of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.
77وَهُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ النُّجُومَ لِتَهْتَدُوا بِهَا فِي ظُلُمَاتِ الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ ۚ قَدْ فَصَّلْنَا الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَWa huwa-alladhi ja’al lakum-an-nujum lita-tahtadu biha fi zulumaat-al-barr wal-bah qad fattalna-al-ayat liqawm ya’lamunAnd it is He Who has set the stars for you, so that you may guide your course with their help through the darkness of the land and the sea. We have indeed explained in detail Our Signs for people who know.
78وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَنشَأَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ فَمُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمُسْتَوْدَعٌ ۚ قَدْ فَصَّلْنَا الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَفْقَهُونَWa huwa-alladhi ansha-akum min nafs wahidah fa mustaqarrun wa mustaw-da qad fattalna-al-ayat liqawm yafqahunAnd it is He Who has created you from a single person (Adam), and (then) He has created from him his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], so that he might enjoy the pleasure of living with her. When he covered her, she became pregnant and she carried it lightly. Then when it became heavy, they both invoked Allah, their Lord (saying): If You give us a Salih (good) child, we shall indeed be among the grateful.
79فَلَمَّا آتَاهُمَا صَالِحًا جَعَلَا لَهُ شُرَكَاءَ فِيمَا آتَاهُمَا ۚ فَتَعَالَى اللَّهُ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَFa lamma atahuma salihan ja’ala lahu shuraka fima atahuma fa ta’ala-Allaah amma yushrikunBut when He gave them a Salih (good) child, they ascribed to Him partners (rivals) in that which He gave them. High be Allah exalted above all that they associate as partners with Him.
Ayushrikun ma la yakhluq shay-an wa hum yukhlaqunDo they attribute as partners to Allah those who create nothing while they themselves are created?
Wa la yastatee’un lahum nasran wa la anfuashum yansuroonThey have no power to give them any help, nor can they help themselves.
82وَإِن تَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَى الْهُدَىٰ لَا يَتَّبِعُوكُمْ ۚ سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْكُمْ أَدَعَوْتُمُوهُمْ أَمْ أَنتُمْ صَامِتُونَWa in tad’uhum ila-al-huda la yattabi’ukum sawaa alikum ada-a-wtumuhum am antum samitunAnd if you call them to guidance, they follow you not. It is the same to you whether you call them or you keep silent.
83إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ عِبَادٌ أَمْثَالُكُمْ ۚ فَادْعُوهُمْ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا لَكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَInn-allazeena tad’un min dun-Allaah ibadun amthalu-kum fad’u-hum falya-stajiboo lakum in kuntum saadiqeenVerily, those whom you call upon besides Allah are servants like you. So call upon them, and let them answer you if you are truthful.
84أَلَهُمْ أَرْجُلٌ يَمْشُونَ بِهَا ۖ أَمْ لَهُمْ أَيْدٍ يَبْطِشُونَ بِهَا ۖ أَمْ لَهُمْ عُيُونٌ يُبْصِرُونَ بِهَا ۖ أَمْ لَهُمْ آذَانٌ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا ۗ قُلِ ادْعُوا شُرَكَاءَكُمْ ثُمَّ كِيدُونِ فَلَا تُنظِرُونِA lahum arjul yamshun biha am lahum aydin yabtirun biha am lahum uyun yubsirun biha am lahum adhan yasma’un biha qul-ud’u shuraka-akum thumma kidun fa la tunzirunDo they have feet by which to walk? Or have they hands by which to hold? Or have they eyes by which to see? Or have they ears by which to hear? Say (O Muhammad): Call upon your partners and then plot against me and give me no respite!
Inn waliyyiay-Allaah-alladhi nazzal-al-kitab wa huwa yatawalla-as-saliheenVerily, my Walî (Protector, Supporter, and Helper) is Allah, Who has revealed the Book (the Qur’an), and He protects (supports and helps) the righteous.

Benefits of Reading Surah Ghafir

People who make this surah part of their regular recitation often mention a few recurring benefits:

  • A stronger sense of hope instead of despair after sinning
  • Better patience during hardship or unfair treatment
  • A clearer understanding of accountability on the Day of Judgment
  • Renewed motivation to make dua consistently, not just in emergencies
  • A reminder that arrogance against truth never ends well

None of these benefits require special rituals. Just reading with attention, and reflecting on the meaning, is enough to notice a shift over time.

Qur’an References

Here are two verses from this surah that capture its core message. Translations are kept short so they’re easy to remember.

1. Ghafir, Ayah 60 Transliteration: Wa qaala rabbukumud-‘oonee astajib lakum Meaning: “Your Lord says: Call upon Me, I will respond to you.” A direct promise that sincere dua is always heard.  Read Ghafir 40:60 on Quran.com

2. Ghafir, Ayah 3 Transliteration: Ghaafiriz-zanbi wa qaabilit-tawb, shadeedil-‘iqaab Meaning: “The Forgiver of sin and Accepter of repentance, severe in punishment.” It shows both Allah’s mercy and His justice together.  Read Ghafir 40:3 on Quran.com

Hadith References

Hadith help explain how the Quran’s message played out in the Prophet’s ﷺ own teaching on dua and mercy.

1. Sahih al-Bukhari 1145 The Prophet ﷺ said Allah descends in the last third of the night and asks who will call upon Him so He may answer, matching the promise in Ghafir 40:60 almost word for word. Read the full hadith on the night of dua acceptance

2. Sahih Muslim 2751a The Prophet ﷺ said Allah wrote in His Book, before creation, that His mercy prevails over His wrath, a beautiful echo of the Forgiver theme running through this surah. Read the hadith on Allah’s mercy prevailing over wrath

Recommended Reading for Deeper Study

If you want to go beyond the surah’s meaning into practical fiqh, two Hanafi texts are commonly kept in libraries and Islamic study archives:

  • Al-Hidayah fi Sharh Bidayat al-Mubtadi by Imam Burhan al-Din al-Marghinani
  • Maraqi al-Falah Sharh Nur al-Idah by Imam Hasan ibn Ammar al-Shurunbulali

These aren’t required to understand this surah, but they help readers who want a structured, classical grounding in Hanafi jurisprudence alongside their Quran study.

Is This Surah Meccan or Medinan?

It’s a Meccan surah, revealed before the Prophet’s ﷺ migration to Madinah, during a time when early believers faced strong opposition from the disbelievers of Makkah.

Why is this surah also called Al-Mu’min?

Because it mentions a believing man from Pharaoh’s household who spoke up in defense of Musa (peace be upon him), showing quiet courage in the face of danger.
