Surah Saffat Transliteration and Translation

Surah Saffat is one of those chapters of the Quran that many Muslims have heard recited but few have actually sat down to understand. That gap between hearing and understanding is a real problem. Most people know the sound of this surah from Friday prayers, yet they cannot explain what it actually teaches.

What Is Surah Saffat About?

So, what is Surah Saffat about, exactly? It is the 37th chapter of the Quran, placed in the 23rd Juz. It has 182 verses and was revealed in Makkah, during a period when belief in one God was being fiercely challenged by the disbelievers of Quraish.

1	وَالصَّافَّاتِ صَفًّا	Wa-as-saffati saffan	By those who set the ranks firmly
2	فَالزَّاجِرَاتِ زَجْرًا	Fa-az-zajirati zajra	And by those who drive away with reproof
3	فَالتَّالِيَاتِ ذِكْرًا	Fa-at-taliyati dhikra	And by those who recite the Reminder
4	إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمْ لَوَاحِدٌ	Inna ilahakum lawaahid	Indeed, your God is One
5	رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ الْمَشَارِقِ	Rabbu as-samawati wa-al-ardi wa-ma baynahuma wa-rabbu al-mashariq	Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and Lord of the places of sunrise
6	إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ الْكَوَاكِبِ	Inna zayyana as-samaa ad-dunya bi-ziinat al-kawakib	Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars
7	وَحِفْظًا مِّن كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ مَّارِدٍ	Wa-hifzan min kulli shaytan marid	And as a protection against every rebellious devil
8	لَا يَسِمَّعُونَ إِلَى الْمَلَإِ الْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ	La yasmaun ila al-malai al-aala wa-yuqdhafun min kulli janib	They do not listen to the exalted assembly, and they are struck from every side
9	دِيًا لَّهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ	Dia lahum wa-lahum adhab wasib	Driven off, and for them is a constant punishment
10	إِلَّا مَن خَطِفَ الْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ	Illa man khatifu al-khutfah fa-atba-hu shihab thaqib	Except one who snatches a fragment, but he is followed by a piercing flame
11	فَاسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَم مَّن خَلَقْنَا	Fa-staftihim ahum ashaddu khalqa am man khalaqna	So ask them: are they a harder creation or those whom We have created?
12	إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّن طِينٍ لَّازِبٍ	Inna khalaqnahum min tin lazib	Indeed, We created them from sticky clay
13	بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ	Bal ajibta wa-yaskharun	But you wondered while they scoff
14	وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا لَا يَذْكُرُونَ	Wa-idha dhukkirru la yadhkurun	And when they are reminded, they do not remember
15	وَإِذَا رَأَوْا آيَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ	Wa-idha rau ayah yastaskhirun	And when they see a sign, they mock
16	وَقَالُوا إِن هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ	Wa-qalu in hadha illa sihr mubin	And they said: this is nothing but obvious magic
17	أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ	A-idha mitna wa-kunna turab wa-izaman a-inna lamabuthun	When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised?
18	وَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ	Wa-abau-na al-awwalun	And our forefathers?
19	قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَنتُمْ دَاخِرُونَ	Qul naw wa-antum dakhirun	Say: yes, and you will be humiliated
20	فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ	Fa-inna-ma hiya zajrah wahidah fa-idha hum yandhuru	It will only be a single blast, and behold they will see
21	وَقَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ	Wa-qalu ya waylana hadha yawm ad-din	And they will say: O woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment
22	هَٰذَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ الَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ	Hadha yawm al-fasl alladdhi kuntum bihi tukadhdhib	This is the Day of Decision, which you used to deny
23	احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ	Ushru alladhina zalaamu wa-azwajahum wa-ma kanu ya’budun	Gather those who did wrong and their companions and what they used to worship
24	مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ فَاهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطِ الْجَحِيمِ	Min dun illah fa-haduhum ila sirat al-jahim	Besides Allah, and guide them to the path of hellfire
25	وَقِفُوهُمْ إِنَّهُم مَّسْئُولُونَ	Wa-qifu-hum innahum mas-ulun	And stop them, for they will be questioned
26	مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَتَنَاصَرُونَ	Ma lakum la tatnasarun	What is wrong with you that you do not help one another?
27	بَلْ هُمُ الْيَوْمَ مُسْتَسْلِمُونَ	Bal hum al-yawm mustasli-mun	Rather, they will surrender on that day
28	وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ	Wa-aqbala ba’dhuhum ala ba’dh yatasaulun	And they will turn to one another, questioning
29	قَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَأْتُونَنَا عَن الْيَمِينِ	Qalu innakum kuntum ta-tunana an al-yamin	They will say: indeed, you used to come to us from the right
30	قَالُوا بَل لَّمْ تَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ	Qalu bal lam takunu mu-minin	They will say: rather, you were not believers
31	وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيْكُم مِّن سُلْطَانٍ بَلْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا طَاغِينَ	Wa-ma kana lana alaykum min sultan bal kuntum qawm taghun	And we had no power over you, but you were a transgressive people
32	فَقَدْ حَقَّ عَلَيْنَا قَوْلُ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا لَذَائِقُونَ	Fa-qad haqq alayna qawl rabbina inna ladhaqun	So the word of our Lord has been fulfilled upon us, indeed we shall taste
33	فَأَغْوَيْنَاكُمْ بِالْحَقِّ فَعَصَيْتُمْ	Fa-aghwayna-kum bi-al-haq fa-asaytum	We led you astray indeed we were ourselves astray
34	فَإِنَّهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي الْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ	Fa-innahum yawma-idhin fi al-adhab mushtarikun	So indeed, on that day they will share in the punishment together
35	إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِينَ	Inna kadhalik nafl bi-al-mujrimu	Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals
36	إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ	Innahum kanu idha qila lahum la ilah illa illah yastakbiru	Indeed, when it was said to them: there is no god except Allah, they were arrogant
37	وَقَالُوا أَإِنَّا لَتَاركُوا آلِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُونٍ	Wa-qalu a-inna latarku alihatin li-shair majnun	And they said: shall we abandon our gods for a mad poet?
38	بَلْ جَاءَ بِالْحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ	Bal jaa bi-al-haq wa-saddaqa al-mursalun	Rather, he came with the truth and he confirmed the messengers
39	إِنَّكُمْ لَذَائِقُو الْعَذَابِ الْأَلِيمِ	Innakum ladhaqu al-adhab al-alim	You shall certainly taste the painful punishment
40	وَمَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ	Wa-ma tujzawun illa ma kuntum ta’malun	And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do
41	إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ	Illa ibad illah al-mukhlasin	Except for the sincere servants of Allah
42	أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ رِزْقٌ مَّعْلُومٌ	Ulai-k lahum rizq malum	Those will have a known provision
43	فَوَاكِهُ وَهُم مُّكْرَمُونَ	Fawakihu wa-hum mukramun	Fruits, and they will be honored
44	فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ	Fi jannat an-naim	In gardens of bliss
45	عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَابِلِينَ	Ala surur mutaqabilu	Upon couches facing one another
46	يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ	Yutaf alayhim bi-kasin min mayin	There will be brought to them a cup from a pure spring
47	بَيْضَاءَ لَذَّةٌ لِّلشَّارِبِينَ	Bayda laddah li-ash-sharibun	White, delicious to those who drink
48	لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنزَفُونَ	La fiha ghawl wa-la hum anha yunzafun	No intoxication therein, nor shall they be exhausted
49	وَعِندَهُمْ قَاصِرَاتُ الطَّرْفِ أَتْرَابٌ	Wa-indahum qasirat at-tarf atrub	And with them will be modest women, companions of equal age
50	هَٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِيَوْمِ الْحِسَابِ	Hadha ma tuadun li-yawm al-hisab	This is what you are promised for the Day of Reckoning
51	إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَرِزْقُنَا مَا لَهُ مِن نَّفَادٍ	Inna hadha larizquna ma lahu min nifad	Indeed, this is Our provision, it will never end
52	هَٰذَا وَإِنَّ لِلطَّاغِينَ لَشَرَّ مَآبٍ	Hadha wa-inna li-at-taghun lasharr maab	This, and indeed for the transgressors the worst of returns
53	جَهَنَّمَ يَصِلَوْنَهَا فَبِئْسَ الْمِهَادُ	Jahannam yasalunaha fa-bi-s al-mihad	Hell – they shall enter it, and what an evil place
54	هَٰذَا فَلْيَذُوقُوهُ حَمِيمٌ وَغَسَّاقٌ	Hadha fa-lyadhiquh hamim wa-ghassaq	This, so let them taste it – boiling water and pus
55	وَآخَرُ مِن شَكْلِهِ أَزْوَاجٌ	Wa-akhar min shaklih azwaj	And other torments of similar kind
56	هَٰذَا فَوْجٌ مُّقْتَحِمٌ مَّعَكُمْ لَا مَرْحَبًا بِهِمْ	Hadha fawj muqtahim maak la marhaba bihim	This is a troop bursting in with you. No welcome for them
57	إِنَّهُمْ صَالُوا النَّارِ	Innahum salu an-nar	Indeed, they will be burned in the Fire
58	قَالُوا بَلْ أَنتُمْ لَا مَرْحَبًا بِكُمْ أَنتُمْ قَدَّمْتُمْ لَنَا	Qalu bal antum la marhaba bikum antum qaddamtum lana	They will say: rather it is you, no welcome for you. You brought this upon us
59	فَبِئْسَ الْقَرَارُ	Fa-bi-s al-qarar	So evil is this resting place
60	قَالُوا رَبَّنَا مَن قَدَّمَ لَنَا هَٰذَا فَزِدْهُ عَذَابًا ضِعْفًا فِي النَّارِ	Qalu rabbana man qaddama lana hadha fa-zidhu adhaba dif-an fi an-nar	They will say: Our Lord, whoever brought this upon us, increase them double punishment in the Fire
61	وَقَالُوا مَا لَنَا لَا نَرَىٰ رِجَالًا كُنَّا نَعُدُّهُم مِّنَ الْأَشْرَارِ	Wa-qalu ma lana la nara rijal kunna naduhum min al-ashraar	And they will say: why do we not see men whom we used to count among the evil
62	أَتَّخَذْنَاهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا أَمْ زَاغَتْ عَنْهُمُ الْأَبْصَارُ	Attakhdhnahum sikhri-yan am zaghhat anhum al-absar	Did we take them as mockery, or have our eyes turned away from them?
63	إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَحَقٌّ تَخَاصُمُ أَهْلِ النَّارِ	Inna dhalika lahaqq takhassum ahl an-nar	Indeed, that is true – the dispute of the people of the Fire
64	قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا مُنذِرٌ وَمَا مِنْ إِلَٰهٍ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ	Qul inna-ma ana mundhir wa-ma min ilah illa illah al-wahid al-qahhar	Say: I am only a warner, and there is no god except Allah, the One, the Irresistible
65	رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفَّارُ	Rabbu as-samawati wa-al-ardi wa-ma baynahuma al-aziz al-ghaffar	Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Mighty, the Forgiving
66	قُلْ إِنَّهُ نَبَأٌ عَظِيمٌ	Qul innahu naba azim	Say: it is great news
67	أَنتُمْ عَنْهُ مُعْرِضُونَ	Antum anhu mu’ridhun	From which you are turning away
68	مَا كَانَ لِيَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ بِالْمَلَإِ الْأَعْلَىٰ إِذْ يَخْتَصِمُونَ	Ma kana li min ilm bi-al-malai al-ala idh yakhti-sum	I have no knowledge of the exalted assembly when they disputed
69	إِن يُوحَىٰ إِلَيَّ إِلَّا أَنَّمَا أَنَا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ	In yuha ilayya illa anna-ma ana nadhir mubin	It is revealed to me only that I am a clear warner
70	إِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِّن طِينٍ	Idh qala rabbuka li-al-malaikat inni khaliq bashar min tin	When your Lord said to the angels: I am going to create a human from clay
71	فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ	Fa-idha sawwaytuh wa-nafakht fih min ruhi fa-qu lahu sajidun	So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down in prostration to him
72	فَسَجَدَ الْمَلَائِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ	Fa-sajada al-malaikat kulluhum ajmain	So the angels all prostrated together
73	إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ اسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ	Illa iblis astakbar wa-kana min al-kafirun	Except Iblis, he was arrogant and was among the disbelievers
74	قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَيَّ	Qala ya iblis ma mana-ak an tasjud li-ma khalaqt bi-yadayya	He said: O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to what I have created with My hands?
75	أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنتَ مِنَ الْعَالِينَ	Astakbart am kunta min al-alin	Did you become arrogant or were you of the high?
76	قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ	Qala ana khayrun minhu khalaqtani min nar wa-khalaqtahu min tin	He said: I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay
77	قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ	Qala fa-khruj minha fa-innaka rajim	He said: then get out of it, for you are expelled
78	وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ لَعْنَتِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ	Wa-inna alayk la-natni ila yawm ad-din	And indeed, My curse shall be upon you until the Day of Judgment
79	قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ	Qala rabbi fa-andhirni ila yawm yub’athun	He said: My Lord, then give me respite until the Day they are raised
80	قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنظَرِينَ	Qala fa-innaka min al-mundhirun	He said: you are among those given respite
81	إِلَىٰ يَومِ الْوَقْتِ الْمَعْلُومِ	Ila yawm al-waqt al-malum	Until the Day of the known time
82	قَالَ فَبِعِزَّتِكَ لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ	Qala fa-bi-izzatik la-aghwiyanna-hum ajmain	He said: by Your might, I shall mislead them all
83	إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ	Illa ibadak minhum al-mukhlasin	Except your sincere servants among them
84	قَالَ فَالْحَقُّ وَالْحَقَّ أَقُولُ	Qala fa-al-haqq wa-al-haqq aqul	He said: the truth and the truth I speak
85	لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكَ وَمِمَّن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ	La-amlanna jahannam mink wa-mimman tabi-ak minhum ajmain	I shall fill Hell with you and all those who follow you
86	قُلْ مَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُتَكَلِّفِينَ	Qul ma as-alukum alayh min ajr wa-ma ana min al-mutakallafun	Say: I do not ask you for any reward for it, nor am I of those who pretend
87	إِن هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ	In huwa illa dhikr li-al-alamun	It is but a reminder for the worlds
88	وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ نَبَأَهُ بَعْدَ حِينٍ	Wa-lata-lamunna nabahu ba’d hin	And you will surely know its news after a time
89	وَإِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰ أَن ائْتِ الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ	Wa-idh nada rabbuk musa an i-ti al-qawm ad-dhalimu	And when your Lord called to Moses: go to the wrongdoing people
90	قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ أَلَا يَتَّقُونَ	Qawm fir-awn ala yattaqun	The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear?
91	قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَن يُكَذِّبُونِ	Qala rabbi inni akhafu an yukadhdhib	He said: My Lord, indeed I fear they will deny me
92	وَيَضِيقُ صَدْرِي وَلَا يَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِي فَأَرْسِلْ إِلَىٰ هَارُونَ	Wa-yadhiqu sadri wa-la yantaliq lisani fa-arsil ila harun	And my chest is tight and my tongue does not speak fluently, so send for Aaron
93	وَلَهُمْ عَلَيَّ ذَنبٌ فَأَخَافُ أَن يَقْتُلُونِ	Wa-lahum alayya dhanb fa-akhafu an yaqtulun	And they have a grudge against me so I fear they will kill me
94	قَالَ كَلَّا فَاذْهَبَا بِآيَاتِنَا إِنَّا مَعَكُمَا مُسْتَمِعُونَ	Qala kalla fa-idhaba bi-ayatina inna maakuma mustami-un	He said: no, so go both of you with Our signs, indeed We are with you listening
95	فَأْتِيَا فِرْعَوْنَ فَقُولَا إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ	Fa-atiay fir-awn fa-qula inna rasul rabb al-alamun	So go to Pharaoh and say: indeed, we are messengers of the Lord of the worlds
96	أَنْ أَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ	An arsil maana bani isra-il	Send with us the Children of Israel
97	قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِن سِنِيكَ سِنِينَ	Qala alam nurabbik fina walid wa-labitha fina min sinnik sunin	He said: did we not raise you among us as a child and you stayed with us for years of your life
98	وَفَعَلْتَ فَعْلَتَكَ الَّتِي فَعَلْتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ	Wa-fa-alta fa-ltak allati fa-alta wa-anta min al-kafirun	And you did your deed which you did, and you were ungrateful
99	قَالَ فَعَلْتُهَا إِذًا وَأَنَا مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ	Qala fa-althuha idhan wa-ana min ad-dhalliun	He said: I did it then while I was of those astray
100	فَفَرَرْتُ مِنكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ فَوَهَبَ لِي رَبِّي حُكْمًا وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ	Fa-farartu minkum lamma khiftukum fa-wahaba li rabbi hukm wa-ja-alani min al-mursalin	So I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord gave me judgment and made me of the messengers
101	وَتِلْكَ نِعْمَةٌ تَمُّنُّهَا عَلَيَّ أَن عَبَّدتَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ	Wa-tilk nima tumunuha alayya an abbadt bani isra-il	And this is a favor you remind me of – that you have enslaved the Children of Israel
102	قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَا رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ	Qala fir-awn wa-ma rabb al-alamun	Pharaoh said: and what is the Lord of the worlds?
103	قَالَ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ	Qala rabb as-samawati wa-al-ardi wa-ma baynahuma in kuntum muqinin	He said: the Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them if you are certain
104	قَالَ لِمَن حَوْلَهُ أَلَا تَسْتَمِعُونَ	Qala li-man hawlahu ala tasta-mun	He said to those around him: do you not hear?
105	قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ	Qala rabbukum wa-rabb abaaikum al-awwalin	He said: your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers
106	قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ الَّذِي أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ لَمَجْنُونٌ	Qala inna rasulakum alladdhi ursila ilaykum lamajnun	He said: indeed, the messenger sent to you is mad
107	قَالَ رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ	Qala rabb al-mashriq wa-al-maghrib wa-ma baynahuma in kuntum ta-qilun	He said: Lord of the east and the west and what is between them, if you understand
108	قَالَ لَئِنِ اتَّخَذْتَ إِلَٰهًا غَيْرِي لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ الْمَسْجُونِينَ	Qala la-in ittakhddta ilahan ghayri la-aja-lannaka min al-masjunun	He said: if you take a god other than me, I will certainly make you of the imprisoned
109	أَوَلَوْ جِئْتُكَ بِشَيْءٍ مُّبِينٍ	Aw law ji-tak bi-shay-in mubin	Even if I bring you something clear?
110	قَالَ فَأْتِ بِهِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ	Qala fa-ati bihi in kunta min as-sadiqun	He said: bring it then if you are truthful
111	فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ	Fa-alqa asahu fa-idha hiya thu-ban mubin	So he threw his staff and behold it was a serpent manifest
112	وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ بَيْضَاءُ لِلنَّاظِرِينَ	Wa-naza-a yadahu fa-idha hiya bayda li-an-nadhirun	And he drew his hand, and behold it was white to the onlookers
113	قَالَ لِلْمَلَإِ حَوْلَهُ هَٰذَا لَسَاحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ	Qala li-al-malai hawlahu hadha lasahir alim	He said to the assembly around him: this is indeed a skilled sorcerer
114	يُرِيدُ أَن يُخْرِجَكُم مِّنْ أَرْضِكُم بِسِحْرِهِ فَمَاذَا تَأْمُرُونَ	Yurid an yukhrijaka min ardhikum bi-sihrih fa-madha ta-murun	He wants to drive you out from your land by his sorcery. What do you advise?
115	قَالُوا أَرْجِ هِ وَأَخَاهُ وَابْعَثْ فِي الْمَدَائِنِ حَاشِرِينَ	Qalu arjih wa-akhaahu wa-ib-ath fi al-madain hashirin	They said: delay him and his brother and send in the cities gatherers
116	يَأْتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَاحِرٍ عَلِيمٍ	Ya-tuk bi-kulli sahir alim	They will bring you every skilled sorcerer
117	وَجَاءَ السَّحَرَةُ فِرْعَوْنَ قَالُوا إِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجْرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحْنُ الْغَالِبِينَ	Wa-jaa as-sahart fir-awn qalu inna lana la-ajran in kunna nahnu al-ghalibun	And the sorcerers came to Pharaoh saying: indeed, we will have a reward if we are the victors
118	قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ لَمِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ	Qala naw wa-innakum la-min al-muqarrbin	He said: yes, and you will be among the close ones to me
119	قَالُوا يَا مُوسَىٰ إِمَّا أَن تُلْقِيَ وَإِمَّا أَن نَّكُونَ نَحْنُ الْمُلْقِينَ	Qalu ya musa imma an tulqi wa-imma an nakun nahnu al-mulqun	They said: O Moses, either you throw or we will be the ones who throw
120	قَالَ أَلْقُوا فَلَمَّا أَلْقَوْا سَحَرُوا أَعْيُنَ النَّاسِ وَاسْتَرْهَبُوهُمْ وَجَاءُوا بِسِحْرٍ عَظِيمٍ	Qala alqu fa-lamma alqu saharu a-yun an-nas wa-starhab-hum wa-jau bi-sihr azim	He said: throw, so when they threw they bewitched the eyes of the people and terrified them and came with great sorcery
121	وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ أَنْ أَلْقِ عَصَاكَ فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ	Wa-awhayna ila musa an alq asak fa-idha hiya talqafu ma ya-fkun	And We inspired Moses saying: throw your staff, so behold it swallows what they fabricate
122	فَوَقَعَ الْحَقُّ وَبَطَلَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ	Fa-waqa-a al-haqq wa-batal ma kanu ya-malun	So the truth was established and what they were doing was invalidated
123	فَغَلَبُوا هُنَالِكَ وَانقَلَبُوا صَاغِرُونَ	Fa-ghalbu hunalika wa-inqalbu saghirun	So they were defeated there and turned back humiliated
124	وَأُلْقِيَ السَّحَرَةُ سَاجِدِينَ	Wa-ulqiya as-sahart sajidun	And the sorcerers fell down in prostration
125	قَالُوا آمَنَّا بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ	Qalu amanna bi-rabb al-alamun	They said: we believe in the Lord of the worlds
126	رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَارُونَ	Rabb musa wa-harun	The Lord of Moses and Aaron
127	قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ آمَنتُم بِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ آذَنَ لَكُمْ	Qala fir-awn amantum bihi qabla an adhin lakum	Pharaoh said: you believed in him before I gave you permission?
128	إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَمَكْرٌ مَّكَرْتُموهُ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ لِتُخْرِجُوا مِنْهَا أَهْلَهَا	Inna hadha lamakr makartumuhu fi al-madinah li-tukhrijua minha ahlaha	Indeed, this is a conspiracy you plotted in the city to drive its people out
129	فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ	Fa-sawfa ta-lamun	But you will soon come to know
130	لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُم مِّن خِلَافٍ ثُمَّ لَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ	La-uqatti-anna aydiakum wa-arjulakum min khilaf thumma la-usallibanna-kum ajmain	I will certainly cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify you all
131	قَالُوا إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ	Qalu inna ila rabbina munqalibun	They said: indeed, to our Lord we are returning
132	وَمَا تَنقِمُ مِنَّا إِلَّا أَنْ آمَنَّا بِآيَاتِ رَبِّنَا لَمَّا جَاءَتْنَا	Wa-ma tanqim minna illa an amanna bi-ayat rabbina lamma ja-atna	And you do not take vengeance on us except because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us
133	رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِينَ	Rabbana afrigh alayna sabr wa-tawaffana muslimin	Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims
134	وَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ أَتَذَرُ مُوسَىٰ وَقَوْمَهُ لِيُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَيَذَرَكَ وَآلِهَتَكَ	Wa-qala al-malau min qawm fir-awn atadharu musa wa-qawmahu li-yufsidu fi al-ardh wa-yatharaka wa-alihatka	And the nobles of Pharaoh’s people said: will you leave Moses and his people to cause corruption in the land and abandon you and your gods?
135	قَالَ سَنُقَتِّلُ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ وَنَسْتَحْيِي نِسَاءَهُمْ وَإِنَّا فَوْقَهُمْ قَاهِرُونَ	Qala sanuqattilu abna-ahum wa-nastahyi nisa-ahum wa-inna fawqahum qahirun	He said: we will kill their sons and keep their women alive, and indeed we are supreme over them
136	قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِ اسْتَعِينُوا بِاللَّهِ وَاصْبِرُوا إِنَّ الْأَرْضَ لِلَّهِ يُورِثُهَا مَن يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ	Qala musa li-qawmihi ista-inu bi-illah wa-sbir inna al-ardh li-llah yurthuha man yasha min ibadih	Moses said to his people: seek help from Allah and be patient, indeed the earth belongs to Allah and He inherits it to whom He wills of His servants
137	قَالُوا أُوذِينَا مِن قَبْلِ أَن تَأْتِيَنَا وَمِن بَعْدِ مَا جِئْتَنَا	Qalu udina min qabli an ta-tinana wa-min ba-d ma ji-tna	They said: we have been harmed before you came to us and after you have come to us
138	قَالَ عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يُهْلِكَ عَدُوَّكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفَكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرَ كَيْفَ تَعْمَلُونَ	Qala asa rabbukum an yuhlik aduwwakum wa-yastakhlifakum fi al-ardh fa-yandhur kayf ta-malun	He said: perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you vicegerents in the land, then He will see how you act
139	وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَا آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ بِالسِّنِينِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّن الثَّمَرَاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ	Wa-laqad akhdhna al fir-awn bi-as-sinun wa-nqas min ath-thimarat la-allahum yadhdhakkarun	And indeed, We seized the family of Pharaoh with years of drought and deficit of fruits that they might remember
140	فَإِذَا جَاءَتْهُمُ الْحَسَنَةُ قَالُوا لَنَا هَٰذِهِ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ يَطِيرُوا بِمُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُ	Fa-idha ja-athum al-hasanah qalu lana hadhih wa-in tusibhum sayi-ah yatiru bi-musa wa-man ma-ahu	But when good came to them they said: this is ours, and when evil befell them they blamed Moses and those with him
141	أَلَا إِنَّ طَيْرَهُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ	Ala inna tayrahum inda illah wa-lakin aktharhum la ya-lamun	Behold, their omens are with Allah, but most of them do not know
142	وَقَالُوا مَهْمَا تَأْتِنَا بِهِ مِنْ آيَةٍ لِّتَسْحَرَنَا بِهَا فَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ	Wa-qalu mahma ta-tina bihi min ayah li-tasharana biha fa-ma nahnu laka bi-muminin	And they said: whatever sign you bring us to bewitch us therewith, we will not believe you
143	فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ الطُّوفَانَ وَالْجَرَادَ وَالْقُمَّلَ وَالضَّفَادِعَ وَالدَّمَ آيَاتٍ مُّفَصَّلَةً	Fa-arsalna alayhim at-tufan wa-al-jarad wa-al-qummah wa-ad-dhifadi wa-ad-damah ayat mufa-salah	So We sent upon them the flood and the locusts and the lice and the frogs and the blood – signs distinct
144	فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا مُّجْرِمِينَ	Fa-stakbaru wa-kanu qawm mujrimu	But they were arrogant and were a sinful people
145	فَلَمَّا وَقَعَ عَلَيْهِمُ الرِّجْزُ قَالُوا يَا مُوسَىٰ ادْعِ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَ	Fa-lamma waqa-a alayhim ar-rijz qalu ya musa id-i lana rabbaka bi-ma ahid indak	So when the punishment fell upon them they said: O Moses, call upon your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you
146	لَئِن كَشَفْتَ عَنَّا الرِّجْزَ لَنُؤْمِنَنَّ لَكَ وَلَنُرْسِلَنَّ مَعَكَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ	La-in kashafta anna ar-rijz lanuminna laka wa-lnursillanna maak bani isra-il	If you remove the punishment from us we will believe in you and send the Children of Israel with you
147	فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْزَ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ هُم بَالِغُوهُ إِذَا هُمْ يَنكِثُونَ	Fa-lamma kashafna anhum ar-rijz ila ajal hum baligun idha hum yankithun	But when We removed the punishment from them until a term they would reach, behold they broke their promise
148	فَانتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَأَغْرَقْنَاهُمْ فِي الْيَمِّ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا وَكَانُوا عَنْهَا غَافِلُونَ	Fa-ntaqamna minhum fa-aghraqnahum fi al-yamm bi-annahum kadhbhu bi-ayatina wa-kanu anha ghafilu	So We took revenge on them and drowned them in the sea because they rejected Our signs and were heedless of them
149	وَأَوْرَثْنَا الْقَوْمَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يُسْتَضْعَفُونَ مَشَارِقَ الْأَرْضِ وَمَغَارِبَهَا الَّتِي بَارَكْنَا فِيهَا	Wa-awrathna al-qawm alladhina kanu yusta-dafun mashariq al-ardh wa-maghariba-ha allati baraka fiha	And We made the people who were oppressed inheritors of the east and west of the land which We had blessed
150	وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ الْحُسْنَىٰ عَلَىٰ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا	Wa-tammat kalimatu rabbika al-husna ala bani isra-il bi-ma sabaru	And the good promise of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of their patience
151	وَدَمَّرْنَا مَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ فِرْعَوْنُ وَقَوْمُهُ وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْرِشُونَ	Wa-dammarma kana yasna-u fir-awn wa-qawmuhu wa-ma kanu ya-rishin	And We destroyed what Pharaoh and his people had built and what they had constructed
152	وَجَاوَزْنَا بِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ الْبَحْرَ فَأَتَوْا عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ يَعْكُفُونَ عَلَىٰ أَصْنَامٍ لَّهُمْ	Wa-jawazna bi-bani isra-il al-bahr fa-atu ala qawm ya-kufun ala asnam lahum	And We parted the sea for the Children of Israel, and they came to a people who were devoted to their idols
153	قَالُوا يَا مُوسَىٰ اجْعَل لَّنَا إِلَٰهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ آلِهَةٌ	Qalu ya musa ij-al lana ilahan kama lahum alihatun	They said: O Moses, make for us a god as they have gods
154	قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْهَلُونَ	Qala innakum qawm tajhalun	He said: indeed, you are an ignorant people
155	إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ مُتَبَّرٌ مَّا هُمْ فِيهِ وَبَاطِلٌ مَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ	Inna haula-i mutatabbir ma hum fihi wa-batin ma kanu ya-malun	Indeed, those are destroyed in what they are in and void is what they were doing
156	قَالَ أَغَيْرَ اللَّهِ أَبْغِيكُمْ إِلَٰهًا وَهُوَ فَضَّلَكُمْ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ	Qala aghayra illah abghikum ilahan wa-huwa fadhalakum ala al-alamun	He said: shall I seek for you a god other than Allah while He has favored you over all peoples?
157	وَإِذْ أَنجَيْنَاكُم مِّنْ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَسُومُونَكُمْ سُوءَ الْعَذَابِ يُقَتِّلُونَ أَبْنَاءَكُمْ وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ نِسَاءَكُمْ	Wa-idh anjaynaakum min al fir-awn yaswmun-kum su al-adhab yuqattilun abnaa-kum wa-yastahyun nisa-kum	And when We saved you from the family of Pharaoh who were inflicting upon you severe punishment, killing your sons and keeping your women alive
158	وَفِي ذَٰلِكُم بَلَاءٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَظِيمٌ	Wa-fi dhaliakum bala min rabbikum azim	And in that was a trial from your Lord, great
159	وَوَاعَدْنَا مُوسَىٰ ثَلَاثِينَ لَيْلَةً وَأَتْمَمْنَاهَا بِعَشْرٍ فَتَمَّ مِيقَاتُ رَبِّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً	Wa-waa-adna musa thalathun layla wa-atammnahaha bi-ashr fa-tamm miqat rabbih arb-un layla	And We promised Moses thirty nights and completed them with ten; so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights
160	وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِأَخِيهِ هَارُونَ اخْلُفْنِي فِي قَوْمِي وَأَصْلِحْ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ الْمُفْسِدِينَ	Wa-qala musa li-akhih harun akhluf ni fi qawmi wa-aslih wa-la tattabi sabul al-mufsidun	And Moses said to his brother Aaron: succeed me in my people and make things right and do not follow the way of the corrupters
161	وَلَمَّا جَاءَ مُوسَىٰ لِمِيقَاتِنَا وَكَلَّمَهُ رَبُّهُ قَالَ رَبِّ أَرِنِي أَنظُرْ إِلَيْكَ	Wa-lamma ja-a musa li-miqatina wa-kallamahu rabbuh qala rabbi arni andhur ilayk	And when Moses came at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said: My Lord, show me that I may look upon You
162	قَالَ لَن تَرَانِي وَلَٰكِنِ انظُرْ إِلَى الْجَبَلِ فَإِنِ اسْتَقَامَ مَكَانَهُ فَسَوْفَ تَرَانِ	Qala lan tarani wa-lakin indhur ila al-jabal fa-ini istaqama makanahu fa-sawfa tara-ni	He said: you will not see Me, but look at the mountain. If it stays in place, then you will see Me
163	فَلَمَّا تَجَلَّىٰ رَبُّهُ لِلْجَبَلِ جَعَلَهُ دَكًّا وَخَرَّ مُوسَىٰ صَعِقًا	Fa-lamma tajalla rabbuh li-al-jabal ja-alahu dakkan wa-kharra musa sa-iqa	So when his Lord manifested His presence to the mountain, He made it dust, and Moses fell down struck
164	فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ قَالَ سُبْحَانَكَ تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ	Fa-lamma afaq qala subhanaka tubt ilayk wa-ana awwal al-muminu	So when he recovered he said: glory be to You, I turn to You in repentance and I am the first of the believers
165	قَالَ يَا مُوسَىٰ إِنِّي اخْتَرْتُكَ عَلَى النَّاسِ بِرِسَالَاتِي وَبِكَلَامِي فَخُذْ مَا آتَيْتُكَ وَكُن مِّنَ الشَّاكِرِينَ	Qala ya musa inni ikhtartuka ala an-nas bi-risalati wa-bi-kalami fa-khudh ma ataytuka wa-kun min ash-shakirun	He said: O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My word. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful
166	وَكَتَبْنَا لَهُ فِي الْأَلْوَاحِ مِن كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مَّوْعِظَةً وَتَفْصِيلًا لِّكُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَخُذْهَا بِقُوَّةٍ	Wa-katabna lahu fi al-alwah min kulli shay-in maw-izah wa-tafsul li-kulli shay-in fa-khudha bi-quwwah	And We wrote for him on the tablets from all things an admonition and explanation for all things. So take them with firmness
167	وَأْمُرْ قَوْمَكَ يَأْخُذُونَ بِأَحْسَنِهَا سَأُرِيكُمْ دَارَ الْفَاسِقِينَ	Wa-mr qawmak ya-khdhun bi-ahsanha sa-urikum dar al-fasiqun	And command your people to take the best of it. I will show you the home of the wicked
168	سَأَصْرِفُ عَنْ آيَاتِيَ الَّذِينَ يَتَكَبَّرُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ	Sa-asrif an ayati alladhina yatakabbaru fi al-ardh bi-ghayri haq	I will turn away from My signs those who behave arrogantly in the earth without right
169	وَإِن يَرَوْا كُلَّ آيَةٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُوا بِهَا وَإِن يَرَوْا سَبِيلَ الرُّشْدِ لَا يَتَّخِذُوهُ سَبِيلًا	Wa-in yarau kull ayah la yuminu biha wa-in yarau sabil ar-rushd la ittakhiduhu sabila	And if they see every sign they will not believe in it, and if they see the path of guidance, they will not take it as a path
170	وَإِن يَرَوْا سَبِيلَ الضَّلَالَةِ يَتَّخِذُوهُ سَبِيلًا	Wa-in yarau sabil ad-dhalala yattakhiduhu sabila	And if they see the path of misguidance they will take it as a path
171	ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا وَكَانُوا عَنْهَا غَافِلُونَ	Dhalika bi-annahum kadhbhu bi-ayatina wa-kanu anha ghafilu	That is because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them
172	وَالَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا وَلِقَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ أُولَٰئِكَ فِي الْعَذَابِ مُحْضَرُونَ	Wa-alladhina kadhbhu bi-ayatina wa-liqai al-akhirah ulai-k fi al-adhab muhdharu	And those who deny Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter – those are in the punishment present
173	وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا	Wa-sabbih bi-hamdi rabbika wa-istghfirh innahu kana tawwab	And glorify your Lord with His praise and seek His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever accepting repentance
174	قُلْ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَسَلَامٌ عَلَىٰ عِبَادِهِ الَّذِينَ اصْطَفَىٰ	Qul al-hamdu li-llah wa-salam ala ibadih alladhina istafa	Say: praise is for Allah and peace be upon His servants whom He has chosen
175	آللَّهُ خَيْرٌ أَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ	A-llahu khayrun amma yushrikun	Is Allah better or what they associate with Him?
176	بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ	Bal aktharhum la ya-lamun	Rather, most of them do not know
177	إِن هَٰذَا إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ وَقُرْآنٌ مُّبِينٌ	In hadha illa dhikr wa-quran mubin	This is but a reminder and a clear Quran
178	لِيُنذِرَ مَن كَانَ حَيًّا وَيَحِقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ	Li-yundhir man kana hayyan wa-yahiqq al-qawl ala al-kafirun	To warn whoever is alive and that the word may be established against the disbelievers
179	أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّا خَلَقْنَا لَهُمْ مِمَّا عَمِلَتْ أَيْدِينَا أَنْعَامًا فَهُمْ لَهَا مَالِكُونَ	Aw-alam yarau anna khalaqna lahum mimma amilat ayidina an-am fa-hum laha maliku	Have they not seen that We created for them livestock from the work of Our hands, so they own them?
180	وَذَلَّلْنَاهَا لَهُمْ فَمِنْهَا رَكُوبُهُمْ وَمِنْهَا يَأْكُلُونَ	Wa-dhallalnahaha lahum fa-minha rakubuhum wa-minha ya-kulun	And We have tamed them for them, so of them some are for riding and some they eat
