About the Author
Deborah Guarino is the author of the children’s classic Is your Mama a Llama! Her playful book has sold more than a million copies.
It is available in five editions including an animated DVD with Amy Madigan as the narrator and a musical version by Andy Mayo. Oprah’s Book Club for Kids featured it. Jennifer Garner, an actress in People magazine endorsed her book and she became a literacy advocate for Save the Children. .In 2010, the title of her book was used as the answer to the $2000 question on the legendary game show Jeopardy. Deborah was also honored by Denver”s Preschool Program, Colorado, who chose her book to be its 2011 choice for the “One Book, One Denver” event. During this event, 1500 copies of Are Your Mama a Llama! were donated to Head Start and preschool programs in Denver by corporate sponsors Kaplan Early Learning Centers and McDonald’s Deborah and the Denver Mayor read her book together.
The Colorado state representative also read the Spanish translation while Deborah read the original. Deborah enjoyed being accompanied by two live llamas during her public appearances at Denver’s Convention Hall and its largest public library. They seemed to enjoy the same activities as Deborah. Deborah was born and raised in New Jersey.
She later moved to New York and London where her original works were broadcast by BBC Radio 4. She is an actor and writer who has also worked as a freelance copywriter, editor and playwright. The presentations include a reading from her book, the story behind it, and a question and response period. There are also fun activities such as an improvised skit, interactive songs and performances of works in progress.
