Surah Hujurat is one of those chapters people quote often but rarely read in full. Many Muslims know one or two lines from it, yet miss the bigger picture the surah is painting. This article walks through what it says, why it matters today, and how you can actually apply it.
What Is Surah Al Hujurat About?
So, what is Surah Al Hujurat about? In short, it’s a manual for good manners between people. Revealed in Madinah, it has 18 verses and covers manners toward the Prophet ﷺ, verifying news before spreading it, making peace between quarreling groups, and avoiding suspicion, mockery, and backbiting.
Surah Hujurat Meaning: Why “The Chambers”?
The surah hujurat meaning in Arabic is “The Private Rooms” or “The Chambers.” It’s a small detail with a big lesson. Respect starts at someone’s doorstep. If you wouldn’t shout at a person’s home, don’t shout over their reputation either. That single image sets the tone for everything that follows in the chapter.
Surah Hujurat was revealed for exactly this kind of community friction, just in a 7th-century setting. The insight it offers is simple: your tongue and your assumptions can break a community faster than any outside enemy. The solution isn’t complicated either — verify, forgive, and treat people as family.

| O you who have believed, do not put [yourself] before Allah and His Messenger but fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing. |
| يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ وَلَا تَجْهَرُوا لَهُ بِالْقَوْلِ كَجَهْرِ بَعْضِكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ أَن تَحْبَطَ أَعْمَالُكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَشْعُرُونَ | Yā ʾayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tarfaʿū ʾaṣwātakum fawqa sawt an-nabiyy wa-lā tajharū lahu bil-qawl kajahr baʿḍikum li-baʿḍ an taḥbaṭa ʾaʿmālukum wa-ʾantum lā tashʿurūn. | O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not. |
| Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for piety. For them is forgiveness and great reward. |
| Indeed, those who call to you from behind the chambers – most of them do not use reason. |
| And if they had been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them. But Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. |
| يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَن تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ | Yā ʾayyuhā alladhīna āmanū in jāʾakum fāsiqun binabāʾ fatabayyanu an tuṣībū qawman bijahālah fatusbiḥū ʿalā mā faʿaltum nādimīn. | O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful. |
| وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ فِيكُمْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ۚ لَوْ يُطِيعُكُمْ فِي كَثِيرٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْرِ لَعَنِتُّمْ ۖ لَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ حَبَّبَ إِلَيْكُمُ الْإِيمَانَ وَزَيَّنَهُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ وَكَرَّهَ إِلَيْكُمُ الْكُفْرَ وَالْفُسُوقَ وَالْعِصْيَانَ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الرَّاشِدُونَ | Wa-iʿlamū ʾanna fīkum rasūl Allāh law yuṭīʿukum fī kathīr min al-ʾamr laʿantum lākin Allāh ḥabbab ʾilaykum al-īmān wa-zayyyanah fī qulūbikum wa-karrah ʾilaykum al-kufr wa-al-fusūq wa-al-ʿiṣyān ʾūlāʾika humu ar-rāshidūn. | And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty. But Allah has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided. |
Faḍlan min Allāh wa-niʿmah wa-Allāh ʿalīm ḥakīm. | As bounty from Allah and favor. And Allah is Knowing and Wise. |
| وَإِن طَائِفَتَانِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اقْتَتَلُوا فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ فَإِن بَغَتْ إِحْدَاهُمَا عَلَى الْأُخْرَىٰ فَقَاتِلُوا الَّتِي تَبْغِي حَتَّىٰ تَفِيءَ إِلَىٰ أَمْرِ اللَّهِ ۚ فَإِن فَاءَتْ فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَهُمَا بِالْعَدْلِ وَأَقْسِطُوا ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ | Wa-in ṭāʾifatān min al-muʾminīn iqtatalū faʾaṣliḥū baynahumā faʾin bāghat iḥdāhumā ʿalā al-ʾukhrā faqātilū allatī tabghī ḥattā tafīʾ ʾilā ʾamr Allāh faʾin fāʾat faʾaṣliḥū baynahumā bil-ʿadl wa-ʾaqsitū inna Allāh yuḥibb al-muqsitīn. | And if two factions among the believers should fight, make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the command of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. |
| The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy. |
| يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا يَسْخَرْ قَوْمٌ مِّن قَوْمٍ عَسَىٰ أَن يَكُونُوا خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا نِسَاءٌ مِّن نِّسَاءٍ عَسَىٰ أَن يَكُنَّ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُنَّ ۖ وَلَا تَلْمِزُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ وَلَا تَنَابَزُوا بِالْأَلْقَابِ ۖ بِئْسَ الِاسْمُ الْفُسُوقُ بَعْدَ الْإِيمَانِ ۚ وَمَن لَّمْ يَتُبْ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ | Yā ʾayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā yaskhar qawm min qawm ʿasā an yakūnū khayran minhum wa-lā nisāʾ min nisāʾ ʿasā an yakunna khayran minhunna wa-lā talmiẓū ʾanfusakum wa-lā tanābazū bil-ʾalqāb biʾs al-ism al-fusūq baʿda al-īmān wa-man lam yatub faʾūlāʾika hum aẓ-ẓālimūn. | O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever has not repented – then it is those who are the wrongdoers. |
| يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ ۖ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا ۚ أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَوَّابٌ رَّحِيمٌ | Yā ʾayyuhā alladhīna āmanū jtanibū kathīran min aẓ-ẓann inna baʿḍ aẓ-ẓann ithm wa-lā tajassasū wa-lā yaghtalb baʿḍukum baʿḍan ayuḥibb aḥadukum an yaʾkul laḥm ʾakhīhi mayttan fakarihtumūh wa-ttaqū Allāh inna Allāh tawwāb raḥīm. | O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful. |
| O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most pious of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted. |
| قَالَتِ الْأَعْرَابُ آمَنَّا ۖ قُل لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَٰكِن قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الْإِيمَانُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ ۖ وَإِن تُطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لَا يَلِتْكُم مِّنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ شَيْئًا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ | Qālat al-ʾaʿrāb āmannā qul lam tuʾminū wa-lākin qūlū ʾaslamnā wa-lammā yadkhul al-īmān fī qulūbikum wa-in tuṭīʿū Allāh wa-rasūlah lā yaltikum min ʾaʿmālikum shayʾan inna Allāh ghafūr raḥīm. | The Bedouins say, “We have believed.” Say, “You have not [yet] believed; rather say, ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” |
| The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful. |
| Say, “Do you teach Allah about your religion? But Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And Allah is Knowing of all things.” |
| يَمُّنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَن أَسْلَمُوا ۖ قُل لَّا تَمُّنُّوا عَلَيَّ إِسْلَامَكُمْ ۖ بَلِ اللَّهُ يَمُنُّ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ هَدَاكُمْ لِلْإِيمَانِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ | Yamunnūn ʿalayka ʾan ʾaslamū qul lā tamunnū ʿalayya ʾislāmakum bal Allāh yamunnū ʿalaykum ʾan hadākum lil-īmān in kuntum sādiqīn. | They regard as favor to you that they have accepted Islam. Say, “Do not regard your Islam as favor to me. Rather, Allah has favored you that He has guided you to the faith, if you should be truthful.” |
| Indeed, Allah knows the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is Seeing of what you do. |
