Common Confusion Around Witr

Many beginners ask what is the Witr prayer exactly, what is Witr Namaz in simple terms, or what is Witr Salah compared to the five obligatory prayers. This confusion is natural, especially since Witr isn’t discussed as often as Fajr or Maghrib.

The Insight: What Quran and Hadith Say

Allah describes voluntary night worship in Surah Al-Muzzammil, explaining that believers spend nearly two-thirds of the night in prayer, or half, or a third, showing flexibility in how night devotion works. Read it here: Alim.org — Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:20.

A second reference appears in Surah Al-Isra, where Allah instructs standing in prayer during part of the night as something additional, with the hope of reaching a praiseworthy station. Read it here: Alim.org — Surah Al-Isra 17:79.

On the Hadith side, one narration describes the Prophet ﷺ telling his companions that Allah gave them an additional prayer, better than anything the world could offer, referring directly to Witr. This appears in Sunan Abu Dawood on Sunnah.com.

Another hadith explains that the Prophet ﷺ would sometimes pray Witr with one rakat, showing the minimum accepted form of this prayer. Find this narration in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi on Sunnah.com.

English Translation:
O Allah, we seek Your help, we ask Your forgiveness, we believe in You, and we place our trust in You. We praise You with all goodness, we thank You and do not disbelieve, and we distance ourselves from whoever disobeys You. O Allah, You alone we worship, to You we pray and prostrate, toward You we hasten and strive. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment, for Your punishment truly reaches the disbelievers.
