Common Confusion Around Witr

Many people wonder how to pray Witr correctly, how to perform Witr with the right number of rakats, and what the Witr dua actually says. This confusion is understandable since Witr isn’t always explained in basic Islamic education.

What Quran and Hadith Say

Allah describes voluntary night prayer in Surah Al-Isra, instructing the believer to stand in prayer during part of the night as something additional, hoping to be raised to a praiseworthy station. Read it here: Quran.com — Surah Al-Isra 17:79.

A second reference appears in Surah Al-Muzzammil, where Allah describes believers spending nearly two-thirds of the night in prayer, or half, or a third, showing flexibility in night devotion. Read it here: Quran.com — Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:20.

On the Hadith side, one narration describes the Prophet ﷺ instructing his companions to make Witr the final prayer of their night before sleeping. This appears in Sunan an-Nasa’i on Sunnah.com.

Another hadith explains that whoever fears they won’t wake up later should pray Witr early, while whoever expects to rise before Fajr should delay it until the end of the night. Find this narration in Sunan Ibn Majah on Sunnah.com.

How to Perform Witr Step-by-Step

Here’s a simple checklist covering how to pray Witr correctly:

  • Timing: Pray Witr any time after Isha, right up until just before Fajr begins.
  • Rakats: Choose 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 rakats, with 3 being the most common practice.
  • Structure (3 rakats): Pray two rakats as usual, then stand alone for the final rakat.
  • Qunut Dua: Recite the Witr dua in the final rakat, typically after standing from Ruku.
  • Intention: Make a clear niyyah that this Salah is specifically Witr before beginning.

Witr (Dua-e-Qunut): Arabic, Urdu, and English

English Translation:
O Allah, we seek Your help, we ask Your forgiveness, we believe in You, and we place our trust in You. We praise You with all goodness, we thank You and do not disbelieve, and we distance ourselves from whoever disobeys You. O Allah, You alone we worship, to You we pray and prostrate, toward You we hasten and strive. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment, for Your punishment truly reaches the disbelievers.
