VerseArabic TextTransliterationEnglish Translation
Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner.
He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has had no partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination.
وَاتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِهِ آلِهَةً لَّا يَخْلُقُونَ شَيْئًا وَهُمْ يُخْلَقُونَ وَلَا يَمْلِكُونَ لِأَنفُسِهِمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا نَفْعًا وَلَا يَمْلِكُونَ مَوْتًا وَلَا حَيَاةً وَلَا نُشُورًاWa-ittakhadhū min dūnihi āliha lā yakhluqūn shay’an wa hum yukhlaqu’ūn wa lā yamliku’n li-anfusihim darran wa lā naf’a wa lā yamliku’n mawta wa lā hayā wa lā nushūrā.Yet they have taken besides Him gods which create not a thing and are themselves created, and possess not for themselves any harm or benefit and possess not power [to cause] death or life or resurrection.
Wa qāla alladhīn kafarū in hādhā illā ifk iftarāhu wa a’ānaahu ‘alayhi qawm ākharu’n fa-qad jāū zulman wa zūrā.And those who disbelieve say, ‘This is not but a lie he invented, and another people have helped him with it.’ Indeed, they have committed an injustice and a lie.
And they say, ‘These are legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon.’
Say, ‘It has been sent down by He who knows the secret [aspects] within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful.’
And they say, ‘Why is it that this messenger eats food and walks in the markets? Why has there not been sent down to him an angel so he would be a warner with him?’
أَوْ يُلْقَىٰ إِلَيْهِ كِنزٌ أَوْ تَكُونُ لَهُ جَنَّةٌ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهَا ۖ وَقَالَ الظَّالِمُونَ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا رَجُلًا مَّسْحُورًاAw yulqā ilayhi kintun aw takūn lahu jannatun ya’kul minhā wa qāla al-zālimūn in tattabi’ūn illā rajulan masḥūrā.Or [why is there] not sent down to him a treasure, or [why does] he [not] have a garden from which he eats?’ And the wrongdoers say, ‘You follow not but a man affected by magic.’
Look how they have set forth examples for you by which they have gone astray, so they will not be able [to find] a way.
تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي إِن شَاءَ جَعَلَ لَكَ خَيْرًا مِّن ذَٰلِكَ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ وَيَجْعَل لَّكَ قُصُورًاTabārak alladhī in shā’ ja’al lak khayran min dhālik jannāt tajrī min taḥtihā al-anhār wa yaj’al lak qusūrā.Blessed is He who, if He wills, can give you better than all of that – gardens beneath which rivers flow and will make for you palaces.
Bal kadhdhbū bi-al-sā’ah wa a’tadnā li-man kadhdhab bi-al-sā’ah sa’īrā.Rather, they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a blazing fire.
Idhā ra’at-hum min maqāmin ba’īd sami’ū lahā taghayyuz wa zafīrā.When it sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring.
And when they are cast into a narrow place therein, bound, they will call out for destruction there.
Lā tad’ū al-yawm thubūran wāḥidan wa-ud’ū thubūran kathīrā.[They will be told], ‘Do not call this day for a single destruction, but call for many destructions.’
قُلْ أَهَٰذَا خَيْرٌ أَمْ جَنَّةُ الْخُلْدِ الَّتِي وُعِدَ الْمُتَّقُونَ ۚ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَزَاءً وَمَصِيرًاQul ahadhā khayrun am jannat al-khuldi allatī wu’ida al-muttaqūn kānat lahum jazā’an wa masīrā.Say, ‘Is this better or the Garden of Eternity which those who feared Allah have been promised? That is for them a reward and [final] destination.’
For them therein is whatever they wish, abiding eternally. It is upon your Lord a promise binding [to be fulfilled].’
And the Day He will gather them and what they worship other than Allah and will say, ‘Did you misguide these servants of Mine, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?’
قَالُوا سُبْحَانَكَ مَا كَانَ يَنبَغِي لَنَا أَن نَّتَّخِذَ مِن دُونِكَ مِنْ أَوْلِيَاءَ وَلَٰكِن مَّتَّعْتَهُمْ وَآبَاءَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ نَسُوا الذِّكْرَ وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا بُورًاQālū subḥānaka mā kān yanbighī lanā an nattakhidh min dūnik min awliyā’ wa lākin matta’tahum wa ābāhum ḥattā nasū al-dhikr wa kānū qawman būrā.They will say, ‘Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies, but You provided comfort for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people [in] destruction.’
فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوكُم بِمَا تَقُولُونَ فَمَا تَسْتَطِيعُونَ صَرْفًا وَلَا نَصْرًا ۚ وَمَن يَظْلِم مِّنكُمْ نُذِقْهُ عَذَابًا كَبِيرًاFa-qad kadhdhbūkum bi-mā taqūlūn fa-mā tastaṭī’ūn sarfan wa lā nasrā wa man yazlim minkum nudhiqhu ‘adhāban kabīrā.So they have denied you concerning what you say, and you cannot avert [the punishment], nor can you help [yourselves]. And whoever among you does wrong, We will make him taste a great punishment.’
And We did not send before you any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others – will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing.’
And those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, ‘Why were not angels sent down to us, or [why] do we [not] see our Lord?’ They have certainly become arrogant within themselves and [are] insolent with great insolence.’
The Day they see the angels – no good tidings [will there be] that Day for the criminals, and [the angels] will say, ‘Prevented and kept away.’
Wa qadimna ilā mā ‘amilū min ‘amal fa-ja’alnāhu habā’ manthūrā.And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make it [like] dust scattered.
Ashāb al-jannah yawmidhin khayrun mustakarran wa ahsan maqīlā.The companions of Paradise, that Day, are [in] better condition and better resting place.’
And [mention] the Day when the sky will break apart with [clouds and] the angels will be sent down, descending.’
The dominion, that Day, is [completely] for Allah, the Most Merciful. And it will be upon the disbelievers, a Day of difficulty.’
وَيَوْمَ يَعَضُّ الظَّالِمُ عَلَىٰ يَدَيْهِ يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي اتَّخَذْتُ مَعَ الرَّسُولِ سَبِيلًاWa yawm ya’add al-zālim ‘alā yadayhi yaqūl yā laytanī ittakhadht ma’a al-rasūl sabīlā.And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands, [he] will say, ‘Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.’
Yā waylitā laytanī lam attakhidh fulanā khalīlā.‘Oh, my regret over what I neglected in the course of Allah’s service. And I was certainly among the mockers.’
لَقَدْ أَضَلَّنِي عَنِ الذِّكْرِ بَعْدَ إِذْ جَاءَنِي ۗ وَكَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ لِلْإِنسَانِ خَذُولًاLaqad aḍallannī ‘an al-dhikr ba’da idh jā’anī wa kān al-shaytān li-al-insān khadhūlā.Indeed, he led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a betrayer.’
And the Messenger will say, ‘O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Quran as [a thing] abandoned.’
And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and helper.’
And those who disbelieve say, ‘Why was not the Quran revealed to him all at once?’ Thus [it is] that We may strengthen your heart thereby. And We have spaced it distinctly.’
And those who are brought to Hell will have the worst place and [in it] they will find no way [of escape].’
Those who will be gathered upon their faces into Hell – those are worse in condition and more astray from [the] way.’
And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture and made with him his brother Aaron as a minister.’
Fa-qulnā ithhab ilā al-qawm alladhīn kadhdhbū bi-āyātinā fa-dammarnāhum tadmīrā.So We said, ‘Go to the people who have denied Our verses.’ And We destroyed them with complete destruction.’
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ لَّمَّا كَذَّبُوا الرُّسُلَ أَغْرَقْنَاهُمْ وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ آيَةً ۚ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًاWa qawm Nūh lammā kadhdhbū al-rusul aghraznāhum wa ja’alnāhum li-al-nās āyah wa a’tadnā li-al-zālimīn ‘adhāban alīmā.And the people of Noah, when they denied the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them for mankind a sign. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.’
And [We destroyed] Ad and Thamud and the companions of the well and many generations between them.’
Wa kullan darabnā lahu al-amthāl wa kullan tabaarnā tatbīrā.And each one We cited examples for, and each one We destroyed with complete destruction.’
And they have certainly passed by the city which was rained upon by a bad rain. So have they not seen it? Rather, they are not expecting a resurrection.’
وَإِذَا رَأَوْكَ إِن يَتَّخِذُونَكَ إِلَّا هُزُوًا ۚ أَهَٰذَا الَّذِي بَعَثَ اللَّهُ رَسُولًاWa idhā ra’awk in yattakhidhūnak illā huzuwan ahadhā alladhī ba’atha Allāh rasūlā.And when they see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in mockery, [saying], ‘Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?’
In kād layuḍillunā ‘an ālihatinā lawlā an sabarnā ‘alayhā wa sawfa ya’lamūn hīn yarawna al-‘adhāb man aḍall sabīlā.‘He almost misled us away from our gods had we not been steadfast to them.’ But they will come to know, when they see the punishment, who is more astray in way.’
Ara’ayta man ittakhadha ilāhahu hawāhu afu-anta takūn ‘alayhi wakīlā.Have you seen the one who has taken as his god his [own] desire? Then would you be responsible for him?’
أَمْ تَحْسَبُ أَنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ أَوْ يَعْقِلُونَ ۚ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا كَالْأَنْعَامِ بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلًاAm tahsab anna akthrahum yasma’ūn aw ya’qilūn in hum illā ka-al-an’ām bal hum aḍall sabīlā.Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in way.’
Have you not seen your Lord – how He extends the shadow? If He willed, He could have made it stationary. Then We made the sun over it an indication.’
Thumma qabaḍnāhu ilaynā qabaḍan yasīrā.Then We contracted it toward Us – a gentle contraction.’
And it is He who made the night for you as clothing and sleep [a means for] rest and made the day a resurrection.’
وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ الرِّيَاحَ بُشْرًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَحْمَتِهِ ۖ وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً طَهُورًاWa huwa alladhī arsala al-riyāḥ bushrā bayna yadayi raḥmatihi wa anzalnā mina al-samā’ mā’an tahūrā.And it is He who sent the winds as good tidings before His mercy, and We sent down pure water from the sky.’
لِنُحْيِيَ بِهِ بَلْدَةً مَّيْتًا وَنُسْقِيَهُ مِمَّا خَلَقْنَا أَنْعَامًا وَأَنَاسِيَّ كَثِيرًاLi-nuḥyiya bihi balda maytā wa nusqiyahu mimmā khalaqnā an’āman wa anāsiyya kathīrā.To give life thereby to a dead land and to provide drink for those [creatures] We created – numerous grazing livestock and men.’
Wa laqad sarrafnāhu baynamhum li-yadhdhkarū fa-abā aktharu al-nās illā kufūrā.And We have distributed it among them that they might remember, but most people refuse except disbelief.’
Wa law shi’nā la-ba’athnā fi kulli qarya nadhīrā.And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner.’
Fa-lā tut’i al-kāfirīn wa jāhidhum bihi jihādan kabīrā.So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with it [i.e., the Quran] a great endeavor.’
And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and a prohibiting partition.’

The Problem:

Many people feel confused when facing modern dilemmas — what’s halal, what’s cultural, what’s simply noise. This confusion isn’t new. Surah furqan was revealed at a time when Makkans mocked the Prophet ﷺ and mixed truth with mockery, leaving early believers unsure who to trust.

The Insight:

The insight this surah offers is simple but powerful: Allah sent down a Furqan, a criterion, so people wouldn’t have to guess. Surah alfurqan opens by praising Allah for revealing this standard to His Messenger, meant to warn all of creation, not just one nation or era.

The Solution:

Once you understand this, reading surah al furqan becomes a practical habit rather than just recitation. Below is a quick summary table, followed by real verses and Hadith that show how this surah applies to everyday decisions.
